Oh, I really agree with this. Deeply connecting to a piece of fiction - creating 9t as an author - is one of the strangest, most affecting experiences we can have, but because it's so subjective and hard to quantify, we end up trying to teach it via "objective" formulas.
When I was in elementary school, there was an overgrown hedge which we were Not Allowed to go into. Logically I knew the hedge backed onto houses. But I couldn't help feeling that if I went THROUGH the hedge, I'd end up somewhere else.
I dedicate "Sleeping Green" to that hedge.
New story day: Sleeping Green is out in Baubles From Bones Issue 3
It’s got everything a good fantasy story should have:
- an enormous Hedge
- a talking fox
- a disastrous open mic night
- a Hound
And more!
Jan rules by the way, he's one of those characters who could never ever hold their own book, or even be the focal character of a smaller team book, but on the Legion he shines as this sad, gay teen Super-Gandalf crossed with Aang
I genuinely am obsessed with this. The expressionist mundanity of the original, Herzog’s more melancholy and entropic imagery, and Eggers doing stark gothic artifice.
“people who are terminally ill shouldn’t have to suffer” and “under capitalism and austerity with next to no social supports, crumbling healthcare and constant vitriol about “people who don’t contribute” euthanasia can/will be used as a culling tool” are both true at once
It's my first time on a best of horror rec list! 😱
So happy to see my flash story “The Cursed Universe Inside Your Eye” (pubbed at well-loved and sadly closed @FantasyMagazine) alongside so many friends and writers I admire. Thanks @EllenDatlow!

If you genuinely don’t understand how anyone can be against this policy, you’ve not actually listened to disabled people.
Listen to our concerns about Canada. Think about how this policy starts a slippery slope in the context where disabled people are judged on productivity.
New story coming your way!!! 💫 So thrilled to finally be able to announce this! “Hound, Hart, Crow, Queen” is one of my favorite things I’ve written - a queer reimagining of Arthurian legend all about love and hope and what it means to dream new futures into being. 🐕🦌🐦⬛👑
