“No amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.”
Today, the public finally gets to see what we stand for: the safety of the American people in the age of AI.
Time and time again over my three year tenure at Anthropic I've seen us stand to our values in ways that are often invisible from the outside. This is a clear instance where it is visible:
I try to not talk about politics. I generally believe the best way I can serve the world is as a non-partisan expert, and my genuine beliefs are quite moderate. So the bar is very high for me to comment.
But recent events – a federal agent killing an ICU nurse for seemingly no reason and with no provocation – shock the conscience.
My deep loyalty is to the principles of classical liberal democracy: freedom of speech, the rule of law, the dignity of the human person. I immigrated to the United States – and eventually cofounded Anthropic here – believing it was a pillar of these principles.
I feel very sad today.
New Anthropic research: AI values in the wild.
We want AI models to have well-aligned values. But how do we know what values they’re expressing in real-life conversations?
We studied hundreds of thousands of anonymized conversations to find out.
We’re starting a Fellows program to help engineers and researchers transition into doing frontier AI safety research full-time.
Beginning in March 2025, we'll provide funding, compute, and research mentorship to 10–15 Fellows with strong coding and technical backgrounds.
