Full circle moment! Elizabeth Heintz, a PhD candidate here at PBRC, attended Louisiana Girls State as a high schooler — now she proudly represents Pennington Biomedical as a Senior Counselor and innovator. This year, she launched a brand-new Science Center Special Project, providing participants with a hands-on experience in writing and reviewing scientific grants addressing health issues in Louisiana, geared towards biomedical research and public health!
How was your weekend? Ours was fantastic: we held an Oroboros Workshop in Baton Rouge with the help of host and local organizer Brian Irving (@MitoPhys, @LSU_Kinesiology). Thanks to all who joined the fun, the science, and of course, the BBQ!

Congratulations to Liz on her well-deserved recognition in @225batonrouge “Twenty in their 20s”feature! As her PhD advisor, I'm immensely proud of her exceptional work ethic, inquisitive mind, and innovative approach to scientific research. Liz's passion for science and can-do attitude make her a standout researcher in our team with a bright future ahead. The Baton Rouge community is fortunate to have such a talented young scientist in its midst. https://t.co/HKG29SNfxO
Registration for the 14th Annual Mitochondrial Physiology Society Summer School is officially open!
MiPschool 2025 is the 14th installment of the Mitochondrial Physiology Society’s flagship training school focused on the history, fundamentals, and conceptual advances in the field of cellular bioenergetics. Participants will gain and improve working knowledge in key areas of study within the field of mitochondrial physiology including substrate coupling control, mechanisms of oxidative phosphorylation and electron transfer, redox regulation, structural organization of the respiratory system, and more. Lecturers will provide detailed presentations on the principles of bioenergetics, and keynote speakers will deliver talks on cutting-edge applications in biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, and biomedicine spanning multiple levels of biological organization.
Important deadlines:
Short Talk Abstract Deadline: March 1st, 2025
Poster Abstract Deadline: April 1st, 2025
Early Registration Deadline: March 1st, 2025
Registration Deadline: April 15th, 2025

This is not something you see very often.
Four decades of Pennington Biomedical Research Center leadership in San Francisco to share experiences, accomplishments, and future directions. Thank you to my fellow Penningtonian Executive Directors - George, Claude, Steve, Donna and of course, Anne Duke, for all that you have done for Pennington Biomedical, the field of obesity and metabolic health!
We look forward to many more great scientific discoveries in the next 40 years!!! 😀
We’ve got scheduled send for emails, but why don’t we have scheduled send for texts yet? My matron of honor does NOT need a 1am message when my brain converts to wedding mode.
Had an amazing week hanging out with Mito & Chlora (and all the cool folks who study them). Ended #EBEC2024 in true Austrian fashion by having dinner on a mountaintop!

Dear @Nature, I am baffled by the monumental mistake about the "definition" of what lactate is, which is shown right in the 1st sentence of this article.
-Lactate is NOT a waste product. Thanks by the work of Dr. George Brooks, It has been known for over 40 years that lactate is NOT a waste product.
In fact, lactate is the preferred fuel by most cells and one of the most important signaling molecules in the body. Particularly in cancer, lactate plays a key role in the process of angiogenesis, immune scape, gene expression and metastasis...
-"Sugar"?. Are glucose and pyruvate metabolism, some of the most complex metabolic pathways in humans, be that poorly simplified as "sugar"?. 😬
-"without Oxygen"?. Again, Thanks to the work by George Brooks, it has been known for >40 years that Lactate can be produced under FULLY aerobic conditions and it's production is NOT only a result of lack of O2....
It is extremely difficult to publish in Nature due to its super high standards and requirements, such as defining what you are studying very well...However, in this article, the are 3 monumental mistakes showing lack of knowledge of what exactly lactate is right in the very first sentence...Now, many people reading the article could walk away with the idea that lactate is a waste product from sugar and produced when there is lack of O2...😬
C'mon @Nature, you, your Editor and reviewers can do better than this...Thank you
That’s a wrap! What a great #EBEC2024. It was fascinating to hear new science, meet new investigators, and establish new collaborations. Now onto some hiking before heading home ⛰️
And that’s a wrap on this year’s #ADASciSessions ! Grateful for the opportunity to share my work and to see all the other amazing work contributing to our mission to cure diabetes. Already looking forward to Chicago for the 85th session!

Incredibly excited and proud to announce that I am an NIH-funded predoctoral fellow! Thankful to those who continue to mentor me and are invested in my success along this journey. @MitoPhys@DrJohnKirwan

Thank you, Gov. Landry and Louisiana Legislators for your unsurpassed support in the 2024 Regular Session. You’ve made it possible for our researchers to continue life-altering nutrition-based research that is making Louisiana residents healthier across their lifespans. You’ve equipped Pennington Biomedical to advance its fight against #obesity and related chronic diseases that rob Louisiana’s health—diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and dementia—and drain Louisiana’ s economy. These #Louisiana leaders know good health is good business for Louisiana. #LaGov #LALege #ScholarshipFirst
Capping off a great day of scientific exchange at Pennington Biomedical with our colleagues from LSUHSC Shreveport. Looking forward to fruitful and productive collaborations and a reciprocal visit in the near future.
