Putin’s warm relationship with Israel is statecraft (Israel reciprocates, there's a huge Russian expat population there and Moscow has practical reasons to keep the relationship workable, especially given the scale of Israeli influence in the West).

Foreign policy is usually about interests, however badly many want it to be about virtue.
