We believe that permanent supportive housing is the best solution to address chronic homelessness in America.
And we also believe that this solution has room for improvement.

“The choice is between creating centers where people can not die from overdose versus [...] die behind bedroom doors down the hall from their parents, in public restrooms & alleyways.” - Sr. Medical Director for Substance Use Disorders, @DrSarahWakeman. We need legislation. ⬇️

Buprenorphine is a lifesaving medication approved for pregnant people w/ opioid use disorder.
Patients on this medication are 50% less likely to die of a fatal overdose.
But the drug war gives parents w/ 2 options: 1) overdose, or 2) lose your kids.

In this cohort study of people experiencing homelessness, drug overdose accounted for 1 in 4 deaths, with synthetic opioid and polysubstance involvement becoming predominant contributors to mortality in recent years. https://t.co/Dq944fuAXb
Creating a deadline for homelessness will not work. Offering rushed and limited options for storage of belongings does not make this plan humane.

"Compulsory treatment violates the trust of the very people we are trying to help," says Dr. Sarah Wakeman, Medical Director for Substance Use Disorder at MGH, at a presser at #MassAndCass.
"The only solution to houselessness is housing."
