@ikirigin@robinhanson A compelling argument is that cap gains grow faster than income and economic growth, and HNW people pay lower effective tax rates.
Re loans. Not taxing productive loans, good. But some HNW people use loans for personal consumption as means of tax avoidance.
@benlandautaylor Comedy writers, production crew, live band, studio rental, etc. I'm sure those costs add up quickly. But yes does seem funny in today's podcast landscape.
@dwarkesh_sp She's great. Bring her back on lol. But I also agree with others here. You seem to have a talent for identifying academics who deserve greater appreciation.
Sometimes I sit back and I’m genuinely proper shocked…….. I’m Shocked at how many people living in this country seem to hate it. And I’m even more shocked at how angry they get at anyone, especially someone like me who actually wants to make it better and show their love for it.
I’m not here shouting politics. I’m not following any party line. I’m speaking from me heart, as a normal bloke who loves his family and loves his country. And for that… they call me stupid. But I got a scholarship to one of the top schools in the country. They call me fat and lazy. But I train every day. I’m strong, I’m fit. They call me a failure. But I’ve built businesses from nothing. I employ staff. I’ve got a roof over my head and a beautiful family I adore. They call me a racist. That one hurts the most. Because that couldn’t be further from the truth. You don’t know me. You don’t know the things I’ve done, the people I’ve helped, or the battles I’ve fought just to get here.
When I was younger I never had no bedroom of my own, I used to sleep on a pull out bed on the floor in my mums lovely little home. I had nothing. So if you’re struggling right now and you’re angry, if you feel like life’s unfair and I do get it. I really do. And if you want to take it out on me, go ahead. I can take it. I’m big enough, tough enough and ugly enough to have it from both barrels. But please don’t give up on yourself. Don’t let your anger and bitteness steal ya future. Believe in yourself. Back yourself. Get up every day and give it a go.
You don’t need to tear someone else down to lift yourself up. If you’re hurting, use that pain as fuel. And Turn it into something positive. I’m not special. I’m not perfect. I’m just a normal fella who refused to quit.
And if I can do it so can you. Let’s stop shouting at each other, and start building something better. A country where we lift each other up. Where hard work matters. Where people have a chance.
I’ll keep doing my bit. I’ll keep working hard. I’ll keep showing up. Day in day out.
And I’ll keep loving this country, even if i get some hate for it. Because this is still a great country and it can be even greater. But only if we start believing again. In each other. And in ourselves. So keep going. Keep dreaming. Keep grafting. Sending Love and Positivity to you all.
Better days are coming.

20 police officers for 6 young women having a conversation in a place of worship.
I’d say this is redolent of a ‘police state’ (it is) but modern Britain also appears to have decriminalised phone theft and shoplifting. I suspect we need a new word for this…
The US government shouldn’t hold stocks. Doing so will lead it to refrain from ENFORCING THE LAW against high-market-cap companies, because it will hurt their stock price. It’s the path to crony capitalism.
If there’s a surplus, pay down debt or return it to taxpayers.
Imagine you come from a very wealthy family. Your parents give your sibling a stipend of £60k a year. It’s not mega money, but it’s more than enough to have a very comfortable life. He wastes all of it - and there’s nothing to show for it.
Your parents ‘waste’ money elsewhere, of course. They eat out, they go on nice holidays. Dad buys flowers for mum every Wednesday.
To address your sibling having no cash at the end of the month what should they do? Cut spending elsewhere to give him more? Even though he has no record of actually finding value and being productive with resources sent his way? Or should they say “sort your act out. If you are still short after doing that let’s see”.
That’s the present national conversation about defence spending. Zero reflection on massive amounts of waste and bizarre decisions (from aircraft carriers to Nimrod subs and Ajax).
Just ‘give me more money’.
@mhartl Interesting thought. Could probably apply to most topics with a low barrier of entry (gossip/banter level language), like whatever generally appears in the news. When engaging at this level, I guess it's polite to assume your interlocutor has as much knowledge as you do.

The problem is people like Reeves (read the political establishment) look at the economy as a giant machine with inputs and outputs and don't have any time for the details of little people.
As I get older I realise its more intelligent to say: pubs shouldn't close.
We were once a world pioneer in new nuclear - and we can be again.
More jobs, cheaper energy, and more pounds in your pocket. That's the difference a Labour government makes.

We don't have to accept disorder.
The Met have acted and made 230 arrests for phone theft in the last week.
This is a HUGE CHANGE from last year which saw phone thefts soar 150% and little response.
Since starting three months ago, @crush_crime has pushed politicians and police for ACTION on rampant phone theft.
Pressure and attention can force change.
Theft does NOT have to be legal in Britain.
We will push for change.
