@AaronBastani Returned from Caen myself earlier this month thinking the same thing.
Compare Saint-Sauveur square now to what it was fifteen years ago. Check out Google street view photos from 2010. Now a superb public space.
It can be done.
@AaronBastani It feels like things are starting to change as a response to getting people back into town centres for both retail and homes although progress seems very slow.
@AaronBastani Many English town centres seem plagued by poor ideas, short-term thinking, & "innovative" solutions from teams with little sensitivity to what was built before. Local stone is dismissed as "pastiche", so standard 'precinct' materials go in - only to look dated within 12 months.
Which do you prefer? It's so exciting to see civic architecture daring to be civic again.
Evolving Stocksbridge's old library into a new one alongside office and community space....
I love that this pub has survived as part of the larger development in Farringdon. The street is so much richer for it. Nice photos on instagram from @LundonLens
Fantastic preserved 1920s cinema interior housed inside a Mcdonalds in Grimsby town centre, Hopefully one day it could be properly restored and opened up again as a cultural space

Redesigning city streets to support human behavior isn't rocket science. But it does take a willingness to challenge the status quo assumptions about public space.

There's something seriously wrong with this countries infrastructure projects if this is what we're ending up with. Proposed vs Reality for Oxford's new train station.
@matthewhodg Thank you.. I was trying to find more information about it but couldn't find anything. Has the full new station overhaul ground to a halt do you know?

In an age of division, how we should build in our towns and cities is actually something we agree about. Our alternative vision with @FTerryArchitect for Oxford Street features in @thetimes today as well as our poll with @DeltapollUK - 79% of the public prefer our approach....
I think projects like this are the future of architecture
Existing buildings retained and adapted, with additional density added through timber vertical extensions

Sterling Heights, MI, joins a list of other Detroit suburbs that will convert dying malls into town centers. Lakeside Mall will be redeveloped into 2,800 new housing units and a town center. Converting dead malls is an easy way to create town centers in the suburbs.
