I'm really curious to see how Alonso uses James. Since it looks like we'll be playing an asymmetrical 4-2-3-1, I can't see James and Palestra playing on the same side. My guess is Palestra predominantly plays LB when James plays. Something like this.
As much as I want Garner because he is such a well-rounded and more defensively capable midfielder, I do think we'll probably end up going for Adam Wharton. If Enzo leaves I think we'll do a madness in the window and get both Wharton and Cook. Depending on sales.
Another player I think would be a good signing and more in line with Alejbegovic's age profile, is Said El-Mala. The guy is the real deal in my opinion and will be a top player in a few years. If it's more of a 'project signing' we're after, there's no one better.
We were going to sign Alejbegovic, and Martinelli fits the profile of 1) They type of signings we've been looking to make this window (25yo, PL proven) and 2) is a tactical fit for what Alonso wants on the opposite side of the attacking fullback. No-brainer for the right price.
- Martinelli would be a great LW option for the right price. Can't think of many who would be better for that touchline role that also needs to track back and defend. He's PL proven, good age at 25. With Arsenal signing Tzolis and potentially Vinicius Jr, I'd try to get him.
Two okay pre-season games from Gittens is not enough to convince me he's good enough to be starting. And if you think Mudryk (who prior to not kicking a ball for 2 years had the football IQ of a dead squirrel) is going to play any sort of role for us, then I've got news for you.
- Jackson is someone I've been back and forth on but I've finally landed on sell. Just doesn't have the mentality. Won't be happy with being a squad option and we need the 60m+ he would bring in to sign CM reinforcements.
- Enzo is someone I wouldn't mind staying but can't see it. Never liked his personality and think it's time we move on. I'm really conflicted when it comes to this prick ngl.
- Lavia's chapter at the club needs to come to an end. Sad but it is what it is.
If I had to guess I'd say we start with something like this on the opening day. Flexibility between a 4 and a 3 with one fullback tucking in and the other high and wide when attacking. And honestly think this is really good. Add an elite GK and CM depth and we can win the title.
I don't give two shits about today's loss. What I do care about is Acheampong only getting 10mins and two of the worst CBs I've ever seen play for this club seemingly being ahead of him in the pecking order.
