A first-hand witness to the Asaba Massacre, Ilomechina Amuwah, the present Obi Obajamma of Asaba, emotionally revealed in the video how he escaped death by a whisker with the help of his Onitsha Bethel Primary School classmate, Bab Ali, who was among the Nigerian troops involved in the massacre.

Ilomechina’s survival reinforces the Igbo saying:

“Na onye ga-akọ akụkọ agha ama anwụ na agha.” — The person who will tell the story of the war will not perish in the war.

Why the massacre?

Col. Murtala Muhammed was in command of the Federal Second Infantry Division. Officers and troops under his command, including Lt. Col. Taiwo Ibrahim, carried out the military operation in Asaba under his instructions.

The Nigerian Army deceived the people of Asaba, telling them they were coming for a peace talk and asking them to come out in their traditional white Akwa Ọcha, a symbol of peace.

According to Ilomechina’s testimony, the men came out dressed in their white Akwa Ọcha, believing they were gathering for peace. The people of Asaba sang, danced and chanted “One Nigeria”, waving Nigerian flags and declaring their loyalty to the country.

Instead, the men and teenage boys were separated from the women and children, taken away and slaughtered in their thousands.

The account says Nigerian troops described the killings as a bitter way to teach the people of Asaba a lesson for being sympathetic to Biafra, supporting Biafra, and being Biafran.

The Asaba Massacre took place in October 1967, during the Biafran War, when Nigerian federal troops entered Asaba and over 2,500 people, especially men, were killed.

This is the testimony of a survivor who lived through one of the darkest episodes of the war.
