@KeeganWiens That will happen when the sun burns through all of the hydrogen in its core and begins the fusion of hydrogen in a layer surrounding the core (which has a larger volume than the core), creating more heat and outward pressure to push against the gravity, allowing it to expand.

@KeeganWiens However, this expansion would cause the core to be less dense, which would make the fusion rate slow down. This would cause the thermal pressure to drop again, and gravity would pull the core back in (i.e. no explosion). The sun has been doing this for the past 4.6 billion years.

@KeeganWiens In the present day Sun, there is a constant balancing act going on between the sun’s thermal pressure, fusion rate, and gravity. If the suns fusion rate were to increase for some reason, the resulting pressure would cause the suns core to expand outwards.
