I tell everyone that apprentices with us similar. Every single step along the way should look like an attempt at a finished product. Spread your mud to look like a finished product, lay the brick to look like a finished product, cut the mud to look like a finished product, tool it to look like a finished product, brush it to look like a finished product. Quality bleeds through a thousand actions.

@orthodoxmason Mortar wasn't the sole issue here. Improper venting and Improper termination were the larger culprits.
See this a lot when unlined chimneys go from fuel oil to gas.
