Rising fuel prices are pushing local hauliers to the brink across our regions. 📈⛽
Speaking to BBC Look North, Policy Lead @JamesBarwiseRHA highlighted the severe reality facing haulage firms: fuel accounts for roughly a third of operating costs, with many members facing an EXTRA £350 per week, per truck. For fleets operating dozens of vehicles, even minor price spikes quickly spiral out of control.
Without decisive action and relief from government, more vital businesses risk being forced out of operation.
That's why we're calling on the government to back the businesses that keep Britain moving, by keeping the freeze on fuel duty, scraping planned fuel duty increases, and introducing a rebate on fuel for essential users.
Members can support the campaign by taking part in our ongoing business confidence survey. Responses will inform our ongoing conversations with ministers.

Just watched the speech in full. One of the best, and most powerfully delivered, by a British politician in a very long time. If he can deliver on his passion and promises, Burnham could be a transformative Prime Minister. But it’s a big ‘if’ …
A central theme of Andy Burnham’s speech at #LabourPartyConference today was the need for the government to be honest about the difficult choices facing the country and to set out a long-term plan to address them.
This strongly resonates with our sector, which faces enormous challenges as spiralling costs put haulage, coach and van operators across the UK at risk.
I was pleased to hear more from the PM about investing in technical pathways which would help our sector tackle skills gaps, including vehicle mechanics.
This follows the Chancellor’s announcement of an additional £100m to help more young people into apprenticeships through local services led by mayors.
Mr Burnham also spoke about a social housing drive which would improve social mobility for many people in our industry. But we need better roads and infrastructure – facilitated through slicker planning processes – to make this happen.
Ahead of #Budget2026 we have called on ministers to reverse planned cuts to their Road Investment Strategy 3 (RIS3) and ensure key projects get the green light.
These are positive moves for longer term, but what about now? Insolvencies plague our sector today and many operators might only be only another fuel price hike away from closing their doors for good.
This is why we continue to call for an essential user rebate – similar to schemes elsewhere – that would relieve some of the pressure and help control the costs of moving people, and food and other goods.
We also urge the Chancellor on 28 October to announce that he’s scrapping plans to increase fuel duty and to not link it to RPI in the new year.
This would help create the conditions for investment, growth and the transition to cleaner vehicles, while recognising the very real pressures businesses are facing today.
We have launched a business confidence survey which will inform our conversations with ministers ahead of the Budget. Please take a few minutes to offer your perspective which will strengthen our case for more government support.

Day one at Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.
Ferdy Willans and Caitlin Delaney have been meeting MPs and ministers, keeping the issues facing road transport businesses in the conversation.
Ferdy caught up with Lucy Rigby KC MP Economic Secretary to the Treasury, while Caitlin met Colum Eastwood MP. The team has also raised the impact of the 90/180-day rule on professional drivers with Hamish Falconer MP, Minister for Intergovernmental Relations and European Relations.
With the Budget approaching and fuel costs firmly in the news, we’ll keep making the case for the businesses that keep Britain moving.

Goodness.
I like and dislike you both.
Not always at the same time.
Was gonna say like marmite.
Personally, I like Marmite. Lots.
Sadly or happily I have those exact same shorts as you both.

Great to see @SimonCowell in Malibu, 20 years after he stuck me on @AGT with the words: ‘I need a judge as arrogant, obnoxious and judgmental as me and your name immediately sprang to mind, Piers.’ If only our fashion choices were as successful as the show!
For those of us of a certain age, the sight of this logo on the front of a bike meant so much. Whether you had a Chopper or Grifter, it meant freedom, adventure and hours with friends.

Been to see my good friend Dave Crowson who still runs this 1990 @ScaniaUK G93 which he’s had from new. And he still sheets and ropes his loads of bagged potatoes. This is really old school retro trucking!
We have submitted our recommendations to @hmtreasury in advance of the Autumn Budget.
Meeting with Treasury officials, RHA Director of Public Affairs and Policy, @RHADeclan raised concerns over an increased tax burden on road transport businesses, and how a rise in fuel duty could cost UK households over £7bn!
We’re calling on the Chancellor to:
1. Continue the freeze on fuel duty,
2. Introduce a fuel duty rebate linked to emissions reduction,
3. Freeze Vehicle Excise Duty for HGVs and the HGV Levy,
4. Introduce an essential user rebate for essential commercial vehicle operators,
5. Extend full expensing to leased assets to drive investment,
6. Make the HGV skills bootcamps a permanent option,
7. Allocate £6 million per annum of additional funding for the Police to tackle freight crime.

20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house. Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else’s girlfriend would resonate quite so much? Thank you. You guys are beautiful.
