Scott Loss's lab at Oklahoma State University studying ecology of global change - climate change, wildlife mortality, invasive species & vector-borne diseases
I'm excited to share our new review paper in @ESAFrontiers showcasing how #CitizenScience programs around the world are advancing science, education & policy on the global issue of bird-window collisions!

Our #CitizenScience study reveals bird collision risks across China—65,633 survey building*days, 3,078 buildings, & 1,000+ volunteers. Key finding: Light & vegetation impact vary by season/scale. Huge thanks to partners & volunteers! @LossLabOSU

With thanks to @LossLabOSU for the heavy lifting to organize and set up, we got to do that cool thing this week that the #students will never, ever forget.

@Seiurus@n_a_gilbert I was thinking about this too but assumed Beryl was tracking too far east - otherwise I'd be out after our first state record Sooty Tern. And yeah we somehow have 3 frigatebird records at Lake Carl Blackwell near Stillwater, somehow none of them associated with tropical storms.
Welcome to OSU @n_a_gilbert!!
And here's a good story. We had our first meet-up to talk shop planned for today. Instead, we found and chased a Bronzed Cowbird (the first record for eastern Oklahoma - pics below) & still managed to talk some shop in the meantime!
Thrilled to share that I am joining the Department of Integrative Biology at Oklahoma State University as an assistant professor! Very excited for this next chapter!
Stillwater, Oklahoma tornado today. Luckily it didn't touch down until the storm had moved to the north over rural areas. @sara_loss got this pic of the tornado after we emerged from shelter and as it moved safely away from town
We're proud of our undergrad researchers presenting their projects at the OSU undergrad research symposium this week - John Ternes (mentored by Riley Lawson) and Aryanna North & Addie Galante (mentored by @HollyTodaro)!

This has a fairly quick turnaround time so please apply and spread the word
A new study suggests the time plants turn green is coming earlier in the spring than past averages - but migratory birds are not following suit.

Hundreds or more migratory birds like orioles, hummingbirds, Painted Buntings, tanagers, warblers & our state bird Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, will die each year colliding with this building. There are ways to avoid this @MattesonCapital@cityofokc@_Bricktown@oklahoma@ABCbirds

We had a "Little Sit" get together for our lab group this morning (like a mini version of a "Big Sit, which is an all day bird count at one location).
It was cold but fun and fueled by donuts and @SMBC bird-friendly coffee!
Check out this BBC podcast including an interview with Ellen Robertson and I about our @PNASNews study showing migrating birds aren't keeping up with earlier springs!
New paper in @PNASNews by Ellen Robertson!
Using #eBird data we show that most migrating #Birds track average (not current) #Plant green-up conditions, leading to decoupling of spring #Migration from earlier spring green-up caused by #ClimateChange
