@schizoonthemic3 11 dominated the spring. Swept both stages, got fastest lap point but finished 2nd, total 56 point day.
Larson was 10th with only 30 points
If that exact finishing result happens again for both, Hamlin would gain 26 and still be down /47 so yeah the 11 needs to win
So does Larson just go into classic Jimmie Johnson mode where he finishes 9th next week and 7th the next week?
He’ll be fast at Homestead but doubt he pushes very hard unless he leaves Martinsville with a 76+ point lead. If I was him I’d just hug the bottom all day at Miami and not risk it.
Toyotas issue is it’s incredibly hard for one car to get max points since the 11, 19, 20, 45 are all so equal they steal points off each other. I doubt one of them has a 70 point day, it’s more likely one of them gets 50-60 and the others get 40-50. Hendrick is good at Martinsville so Larson will probably run 5th-10th
@schizoonthemic3 Let’s say Bell or Hamlin has absolute max points day (76 points)
Larson finishes 15th with no stage points
Bell/Hamlin will still be 18 or 19 points behind going into Miami
Also if the 33 was in on a conspiracy to help the 5, he wouldn’t have nearly ended his entire championship run by shoving him 3 wide. This was a disaster for Larson. If Larson got crashed here and the 11 wins, Chevy would be fuming at RCR.
Derek is one of the best superspeedway spotters, telling drivers to hold it wide open is extremely common because normally you aren’t running 100% since you’re backing up to get a run.. that’s how you build momentum
If any team in the garage was going to pull over for another guy, it’s certainly not going to be the RCR 33 team/driver. Derek was holding him back to build a run off the 34, then once the had the run was letting him know to go get the 47.
How heartbroken they would’ve been watching Mark Martin flip at Talladega 2009 with 3 races left in the season and lose 80 points then lose the title by like 140
I mean he has to gain 4 more points over 11/19/20 in order to clinch. So he needs to score at least 4 more points total at Martinsville than they do.
For example if Hamlin has a 50 point day, Larson needs to have a 54 point day to clinch, since he can’t just score 4 points total, he needs to gain 4 more points than Hamlin to clinch
@drizz_81 Exactly. He drives for Richard and that group is a loyal bunch they’re gonna go for it
plus why would any driver like Larson want to win a race where the other guys “shut their car off” to let you win
Since no one lifted, can we talk about how much better the speedway package is now that the guy could literally go from 11 to 1st and they just weren’t gridlocked
Two things from NASCAR:
1. They looked at the SMT data and Stenhouse, Byron and Custer were all wide open from Turn 3 to the end of the race (none of them lifted to let Larson win, in other words)
2. They say Larson's left-side tires were on the yellow line but never below the yellow line. So they reviewed that and say it's legal.
Hamlin only having minor damage is unreal.
Some bad luck this chase but also continues to get insane bailouts nearly every week to keep him in contention.
-Ran mid at Gateway but most of his competition crashed (19, 20, 12)
-Blew a tire and sped on pit road at Phoenix, but the points leader blew a tire and had a worse day
-Half his competition crashes at Talladega, involved but his toe links are fine
Gateway was the biggest one IMO because they ran 9th all race and got outpaced by the 19/20 who were likely going to be top 5 (20 probably was going to win) and scammed a top 10. For all the bad luck he talks about the fact that he’s still in it shows how fortunate his bad days have been (1 terminal crash all year is still pretty crazy)
Austin hill gets told pre race “hey we want you to try to win but if you can help Larson, don’t hurt him since he’s our teammate”
>Austin hill shoves himself him 3wide to hang Larson out to dry and nearly cost LS him a title
I respect the dedication Austin Hill has to only himself.
This kinda got overblown tbh. I’ve spoken about manufacturer orders and this is very typical considering he’s the only Chevy in the title conversation. They didn’t tell everyone to not win, they’re just saying don’t go out of your way to screw him.
Which is actually fucking hilarious because Austin Hill still did go out of his way to Larson and try to win lmfao
Talladega chatter from garage area: Hearing Chevy has instructed teams to help Larson. Don’t let him get hung out at end of stages to max potential for stage points. Talking to Toyota CC that may hurt their cars bc so many Chevys up front helps Kyle but also can take stage points away from Toyota drivers. It’s one thing to have a plan it’s another to execute. I expect all Chevy teams to be on Larson’s strategy to maximize the 5’s day. The “Larson effect” w Chevy will be a fascinating one. Will it work? Must see TV! 2pmET NBc #NASCAR
