It’s been an incredible winter for shorties here at Elmley. With so many in one site there are lots of noisy scraps between birds coming out of roost. But in the last few days some owls are also showing territorial display behaviour with wing clapping & sky diving from height.

Wonderful to see this short film taken at Elmley of a bittern successfully hunting voles on @BBCSpringwatch #Winterwatch2024 this evening. Bitterns continue to defy their reputation for being secretive by regularly showing extremely well along the entrance track.

The barn owls remain very active, hunting well into the morning & out during the afternoons as prey gets harder to find in the colder weather. Enjoy at a respectful distance - these beautiful creatures need space to hunt, feed & roost
