@MikeBloomberg opening the summit stating that even though we are making progress - "we have shut down 70% of EU coal" - we are not moving fast enough. RE investment needs rapidly scaling and into the right regions- stating that Africa only receives 3% of global RE investment.
@GustavoDeVivero For those of us in industry, @LouBurrows7 says, the benchmarks drive positive ambition in both government targets and industry action.
They help provide a better idea of the policy environment and inform our planning for the next 5-10 years, she says.
The goal of tripling renewables by 2030 is one of the key levers to meeting the 1.5°C goal.
If we want to turn this goal into action, we need clarity at the national level, says @_neil_grant at the launch of our 1.5°C compatible wind and solar benchmarks.

🚀 The new Labour govt is not messing around —exciting news on lifting the onshore wind ban.
This boosts energy security, economy, jobs, and efforts to meet net-zero. Important to note the significant public support behind this decision too, as highlighted by @nathansbennett 👇
And finally - just to say, this decision is a popular one.
DESNZ's public attitudes tracker has support for onshore wind at around 78%.
A recent poll by Savanta found that 74% back rapid overturning of effective ban for new onshore wind after election.
And support's been rising for a while now. Around a third of people said they're more supportive of onshore wind than they were five years ago.

Wow, that was quick.
The effective ban on onshore wind farms in England has been lifted, just a few days after Labour took power.
Planning barriers cut, so "onshore wind applications will be treated in the same way as other energy development proposals"

You have once again put your trust in me and I will not let you down.
It is a privilege and honour to have been appointed as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.
This government has won a mandate to deliver a bold plan for energy independence, lower energy bills, good jobs and to tackle the climate crisis.
That work begins now.
