Honored to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run this morning.
Not only does it help us kick off the Special Olympics Kentucky Summer Games, but it benefits Special Olympics Kentucky to help provide year-round sports training, competition, and life-changing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
👨🚒 @loukyfire held a high-angle technical rescue course at Louisville Water’s B.E. Payne Water Treatment Plant. The partnership between Louisville Fire and Louisville Water helps them prepare for emergency situations they could encounter on the job. More: https://t.co/aavcJfVGhP
Today, we celebrate the life and memory of Rachel's and my dear friend, Ronel Allen Brown Sr.
I first met Ronel at Rooster’s near his home in Fern Creek just as I was starting my campaign for Mayor. From the first moments of our conversation, we hit it off – sharing values, a love of our families, of public service, and our city. We went on to share many wonderful meals and times together over the last five years.
Ronel spent his life showing up for other people. He was a proud, respected and dedicated member of @loukyfire, a cherished public school teacher, and an important member of our team in the Mayor’s Office. In each of these roles, Ronel shined while making our city shine.
Ronel loved life, his god, his family, his friends, his city, and his UofL Cardinals. We all loved Ronel back. He made every person he interacted with feel so good, so valued, and so supported.
May Ronel's memory be a blessing to us all.
@loukyfire will have a 24-hour presence at Churchill Downs Thursday morning through Sunday morning
Firefighters, inspectors, and equipment will be staged throughout the track during Thurby, Oaks, and Derby
Citywide fire coverage will remain fully operational outside the event area
LFD teams will respond to emergencies, monitor safety hazards, and assist EMS with medical incidents
Louisville Fire & Rescue Captain Donovan Sims joined me this morning to talk about the department’s recruitment and selection process and what candidates can expect during the 26-week fire academy.

@loukyfire:
Cold weather is a greater threat for firefighters than snow, so please take precautions
When cooking, unplug appliances when you’re finished using them
Overnight, open your cabinets and let your faucets drip to help prevent pipes from freezing
If you must travel, make sure your car is stocked with warm clothes, a blanket, water, and snacks
Let’s give it up for the real heroes👏👏
While most of us are home staying warm, hundreds of Metro employees are out working long shifts- day and night- to keep Louisville as safe as possible.
Thank you for showing up for our city when we needed it most.
Portable generators can be useful during #WinterStorm but can cause injuries and death if not used safely. Use generators outside ONLY! At least 20 feet from house. Keep away from doors, windows and vents. Do not fuel while it is running. https://t.co/cHKxLeN6rq #WinterReady
Candle Safety:
Flashlights are recommended for emergency lighting
Flameless/battery operated candles are recommended
If you use real candles, be sure they are in sturdy non‑combustible containers
Keep candles clear of combustibles
Never leave candles unattended
Be sure to extinguish candles before leaving home or going to sleep
Potential for Power Lines and Tree Limbs to Fall:
Stay away from downed power lines and tree limbs.
Notify LG&E.
Service Trucks will be staffed to monitor lines down, if LG&E has a high call volume.
Space Heaters, Ovens, & Stoves:
The use of space heaters is strongly discouraged
Keep anything that can burn/ignite at least 3 feet away from the space heater
Make sure your space heater has an auto shut off if it tips over
Plug directly into wall outlets. Do not use extension cords or power strips
Turn space heaters off when you are leaving the room or going to bed
Only use heaters listed by a recognized testing laboratory
Use refueling precautions with kerosene heaters
NEVER use your oven or stove to heat your home
Gas ovens and stoves put you at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as exposure to other dangerous gases
Hydrants:
Hydrants are winterized and well maintained by Louisville Water Company.
Unlikely event that hydrants freeze. During extreme cold temperatures, LFD has SOPs during emergency operations to help keep hydrants thawed and functioning properly.
Following hydrant use, LFD works closely with the Louisville water Company to help maintain hydrant operation and prevent frozen hydrants.
Public can help by shoveling snow and ice 3’ away from hydrants on their property.
Portable Generator:
Use portable generators outdoors in well‑ventilated areas away from all doors, windows and vents, and as far away as possible to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Do not use a generator in a wet location – this can cause shock or electrocution.
Connect appliances to the generator with heavy‑duty extension cords.
Turn off generator before refueling. Spilling fuel on a hot engine can cause a fire.
Brown Cancer Center and the lab at UofL Hospital recently teamed up to offer prostate cancer screenings for @LMPD and first responders like @loukyfire. The screening is done through a simple blood draw to monitor PSA levels.
Men should start PSA testing between ages 40-50 depending on risk factors. Learn more: https://t.co/dcmaO0Wi5P
