Read alouds are essential for students to hear and to foster a LOVE of reading! Teaching a kid "how" to ride a bike won't make him ride it. Kids ride bikes for the JOY of it, freedom, escape, independence . . . We must teach them the LOVE of reading 4 ALL of the reasons above!
