Elvis Presley sharing a warm, candid hug with his mother Gladys in the kitchen of their Audubon Drive home in Memphis, July 4, 1956. Photo by Alfred Wertheimer.
On this particular morning, Elvis had just arrived back home after a whirlwind trip to New York for The Steve Allen Show. He was scheduled to play a massive homecoming charity gig at Russwood Park later that night, but before any of the rock-and-roll chaos started, he just wanted to hang out in the kitchen at Audubon Drive. Gladys was busy slicing up a cantaloupe at the counter when Elvis walked up and wrapped his arms around her.
Mick Jagger and David Bowie huddled together at the Café Royal in London, July 3, 1973. A look inside the legendary "Last Supper" after-party held the night Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust, captured by Mick Rock.
Just hours before this photo was taken, Bowie had completely shocked the music world—and his own bandmates—by announcing live on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon that it was the last show they would ever perform, effectively retiring Ziggy Stardust at the peak of his fame.
