@adaobiadibe_ I don't think it necessarily means it's just psychological. My guess would be either 1. It's such a strong circuit that just the dream of you being in that situation could make it appear, in that case a little psychosomatic (what happens if you try to imagine drinking too much)
@adaobiadibe_ But also, if I knew the public was giving me credit for something I didn't do, I would say this outright and get the story straight. So it does rub me the wrong way.
@adaobiadibe_ Sure, I don't think they are outright saying the science is new. However, I think they use the public's incorrect perception to their advantage, making more of a sensational story and increase public engagement.
@adaobiadibe_ They are impressive and move science forward, and have been progressing fast due to money and being a biotech company, but the way the CEO talks about their work is deceiving and undercutting academia.
@adaobiadibe_ My main problem with Neuralink, ever since they first started, is that they convey to the public that their experiments are groundbreaking novel discoveries when in fact they are not.
@adaobiadibe_ The presenting scientist was very good at acknowledging the prior work in humans and NHPs which had first done what they were doing experimentally.
@adaobiadibe_ When Neuralink came to my university for a talk (2 years ago maybe), the impact and novelty that stood out to me was their unique implantation technique which was basically harpooning the brain with the electrode tendrils, their custom analysis software, & their good results.
@adaobiadibe_ But, I've spoken to and listened to talks by patients with recording and stimulating chronic electrodes, & they are very happy with their implants helping their motor/sensory conditions. There have been studies investigating speech, at least with acute recordings if not implants.
@adaobiadibe_ Yeah, it's been done for quite a while in humans, supported by lots of important animal and non-human primate work. It's a difficult and expensive surgery currently, and would require enrollment in research studies since there's still lots to learn and monitor.
@adaobiadibe_ Additionally, the field has already been implanting multiple electrode arrays in human sensory/motor cortices for years, including in temporal cortex for decoding speech. It's a bit deceiving when readers think they're the first to do things like this.
@adaobiadibe_ The number of electrodes is impressive, however there is current debate in the neuroscience field on whether more neurons equals more knowledge. One thing that would move the field forward more is new ways to analyze this data. 1/2
