Is this the most haunted property in South Africa?👻
Kempton Park Hospital was built in 1978 and has been closed since 1996. The 7-storey hospital accommodated 350 beds in its heydey. Government forced the hospital to close without any explanation. Promises to demolish the hospital at the time went unfulfilled.
In 2006, plans to reopen the property were stalled due to a controversial tender process.
In March 2013, construction was supposed to start on what government promised to be a R244 million revamp. Construction was then to end in July 2014. No construction commenced and no money was spent on renovations.
In November 2016, then-health MEC Qedani Mahlangu promised to demolish the building and rebuild it. This too never materialised.
The Department of Health owns the grounds of the property. Apparently they spend over R1 million per year of tax payer’s money to secure the property from trespassers and vandalism. Metal beds, paperwork and hospital equipment are still literred throughout the property (if they haven’t been stolen yet) which is what attracts individuals to sneak in and visit the “haunted” site.
Its a real shame that millions of rands worth of medical equipment wasn’t repurposed and that the builing structure itself has been neglected when there is a demand for the hospital. Tembisa Tertiary Hospital and Edenvale Hospital in Ekurhuleni are full and there has always been a demand for Kempton Park hospital to be reopened. There are no official plans to open the hospital anytime soon.
Hospital closure without explanation and millions of rands worth of equipment gone to waste due to government. I would love to hear your thoughts on this property in the comments below.
