One reason why xwOBAcon isn't predictive: Pitchers can *generally* nudge EV/LA, but can't stop balls randomly landing here.
Predictive wOBAcon solutions basically overweight barrels (@tangotiger@MaxSportsStudio) which doesn't help pitchers who don't control swing power.

Is it time to move on from these slow starts?
I could think of no better guest than @enosarris to go through the slow starters with me and figure out who is droppable and who we should hold onto.

Brent Headrick had a need for speed long before the #Yankees' bullpen battle, as the RP comes from a family of drag racers.
He no longer does 140-mph Vin Diesel impressions, though. Instead, Headrick is trying to maintain his own velo.

🆕 @NYDNSports: Months before Carlos Lagrange's jaw-dropping spring, the #Yankees phenom joined Finlete. The company lets fans purchase shares of a player's potential future earnings like a stock.
Here's a detailed look at how Finlete works, why Lagrange wanted to do this, what he's gotten out of it, and why the flame-thrower isn't worried about the potential pitfalls of fans investing in athletes:

I spoke to Dellin Betances about the Carlos Lagrange comps. He gets where people are coming from, but he actually thinks the #Yankees prospect has the potential to be better than him.
“I just feel like this kid could be one of the best starters. I went to the bullpen, so I failed at being a starter. I feel like he can actually excel at that."

Cam Schlittler said he got some of the best sleep he's ever had prior to his Wild Card gem last October. The #Yankees' starter wasn't basing that on feel, but on data collected by his WHOOP.
The devices monitor sleep and recovery, and they've become popular in the Bombers' clubhouse.

Jasson Domínguez was supposed to play more than 11 games in the Dominican Winter League. A wrist issue cut that short.
But Domínguez still came away from it gaining a greater baseball perspective as he continues to put in the work for his Yankees future

Luis Rojas: “I think a lot of balls, specifically straight back really hurt him, because he had to drop step & then push really hard on those hamstrings. Those were the ones where he was a tad slower than in the past & he couldn’t get to some baseballs & it crushed his metrics.”
Ryan Weathers oozes potential:
The New York Yankees acquired Weathers for a prospect package and slots in as a SP4 per FanGraphs' RosterResource.
That projection is way too low—here's why:
My gut says the #Marlins should've gotten more. Very little to dislike about Weathers (sans injuries).
Below is a snapshot of Dillon Lewis' 2025 MiLB data (fixed from error in last post). Awesome exit velo & zone miss combo. Creating a ton of damage in on his hands.

1/ Teams have gotten much louder about attacking the middle of the plate the last few years — with all pitches, and especially with breaking balls before 2 strikes, where the value is highest.
So I looked at the bucket where this should show up the clearest:
breaking balls only • before 2 strikes • pitchers under 30
From 2015–2024, heart-rate doesn’t move.
2025 is the first real change, and it’s ~1%.
The philosophy shifted.
The outcomes barely did.
Great stuff from Chris here. If you apply this to Imai's fastball, he's 11.8" iVB and 10.9" HB. Emerson Hancock / Luis Ortiz area.
This is the cold water I've heard from some teams on his profile (superpower backs up). But I'll admit I'm still enamored with his angles + mix.
