.@TheAlligator correctly confirmed that Grace Marketplace is a "low-barrier shelter." "Upon entry for emergency shelter, GRACE does not require proof of identification, a criminal background check, a drug screening, evidence of sobriety or participation in mental health or substance use treatment."

However, Hailey Kon “fact-checked” questions I asked the people who hold the data — then stamped some inquires as false, misleading or not established because those people still haven’t answered the questions. She repeatedly changed open questions into so-called "claims." This is sloppy journalism and in some instances libelous.

For example, I repeatedly asked GRACE, Mayor Ward, and commissioners, including Commissioner Bryan, to name one other “low-barrier” shelter that does not screen for sex-offender status or recent violent felonies. They couldn’t. “Every major city does low-barrier” is not an answer.

Trespass after someone explodes on campus is not screening at the door.

Low barrier ≠ no check for violence or sex-offense history.

The Alligator Hailey Kon also rated it False that the model can draw people with criminal records from elsewhere. In the original email sent Aug 27, 2026 I state:

"I respectfully request written information on inflows into the local homeless system from outside Alachua County and from recent jail or prison release, including whether public funds have been used to transport non-local individuals here. I also ask how many Grace Marketplace guests in the past 24 months had violent-felony convictions, sex-offense registrations, or open warrants at intake, or whether that data is not even collected because intake does not screen."

I have yet to receive a substantive answer. I said I didn’t have that dataset. That’s why I asked GRACE and the City. Rating an unanswered records request “False” because an interim CEO Bonner said “the majority” are local is not journalism. There is no reasonable reading of my email that supports a false determination.

The same leadership has publicly admitted 81 people came to GRACE from Florida prisons in one year, confirming my questions as actually true. GRACE/City reps have also publicly admitted that 42% of GRACE residents come from outside of Alachua County, based on self reports (actual numbers using a proper background check may be higher).

What the Alligator ignored:
• The Alligator was furnished a response to a public record report showing 384 dispatches to GRACE in July 2026 alone — about 12 a day, 205 criminal
• FBI 2024 violent rate 738/100k, more than 2x a common national figure (~359)
• GPD violent incidents +22% H1 2026 vs H1 2025 (414 → 506), including jumps in rape, robbery, and aggravated assault
• A 26-college-town review ranked Gainesville #1 for most violent crimes
• GPD sworn staff 292 (2011) → 239 now
• City Commissioner comment that more than half the jail was estimated unhoused, at $127/day
• Form 990: $5.81M revenue, 91.2% grants; city contract ~$2M

An address on a booking sheet doesn’t prove someone slept at GRACE that night. I explicitly said that. It also doesn’t erase repeat offenders, recent prison releases, and charges near UF, midtown, trails, and student housing.

“It’s 5 miles from campus” does not put a checkpoint on an RTS bus (noting passes for Grace Marketplace have been confirmed via public record requests).

Alligator: Issue a retraction. Demand for the City/Grace to Name the peer shelter. Release the origin and criminal-history data.
