@DrKimberlyHelms@cultofpedagogy @zoom_us Another @zoom_us wishlist item would be the ability to see all the breakout rooms at once while you just hear and talk to one small group. So most kids could work independently on something while you visually monitor everyone in the class and run a small group with a few kids.
Things go off course with assignment expectations when you have a substitute? Sounds like a problem of our classroom practice. Simplified TTL Logic model to the rescue! @TeachtoLead#TTLNetwork#TMILearns#studentvoice
#TMILearns Slow Chat A1: I'm proud to have started new practices this year: first year using a workshop model for writing, first year with a real classroom library, first try with 1 on 1 reading conferences. I got all 3 off to a good start and kept reflecting & improving.
A short Google Forms survey of your students can tell you so much about what they’re bringing to a unit - expertise and room for new experiences. Just read mine from today and adapted my plans for tomorrow! #TMILearns#studentvoice
Just five minutes worth of notes from #NCTE18 Creating Passionate Reading Communities session with @pernilleripp @pennykittle and @donalynbooks Feeling inspired!
Overheard in 7th Grade English today (during a game of Fairytale Pictionary to set up a lesson on allusion): "This is the weirdest English class ever!" Novelty wakes the brain up! #stickylearning#TMIlearns
A5: In our unit on The Devil's Arithmetic, I had the kids research a question that the reading raised for them about the Holocaust. I often want to encourage wondering and inquiry like this, but struggle with how to appropriately scaffold. #TMILearns
To be clear: it was a very simple human "computer" that just did a simple addition problem. We only had 25 people, so only 25 1s or 0s to work with. Still, it made the concepts of binary numbers and code concrete for me.
A1: One of my most impactful learning experiences was in 7th grade math when we "built" a "computer". We were each a 1 or a 0 in the code. It was challenging and helped me understand something in the real world that had previously been mysterious. #TMILearns
A3: I try to keep the idea of transfer up front in my planning. How will kids transfer what we're doing today to the rest of their reading and writing lives? #TMILearns
What do you do when one section of a course has extra class meetings because of field trips etc.? Collaborate with your awesome librarian @LynnLada1 on plans for a book tasting!
Feeling so lucky to have attended @JSerravallo ‘s fabulous workshop on Strategies and Structures for Teaching Reading and Writing today. I can’t wait to put this learning into practice! #TMILearns
