"Mental Illness Is Not in Your Head - Decades of biological research haven’t improved diagnosis or treatment. We should look to society, not to the brain".

Being #trauma informed cannot and should not be a buzzword reduced to workshops and KPIs. Trauma informed approaches require a fundamental shift away from superficial or top-down change and towards deep, liberatory, and Community centered transformation.
I am a Trainee Clinical Psychologist researching the impact of sexual violence on Black women’s mental wellbeing & identity.
Your voice is important & will help us understand what needs to be done to better support black women.

To be told you are suffering from an internal mental dysfunction/disorder, when in fact you are suffering from unmet psycho-social &/or relational needs, is to potentially open yourself up to being worryingly misled, maddeningly misunderstood & harmfully mismanaged.
Since the 1980s we've been told that emotional suffering is rooted in untreated 'mental disorders' rather than in unmet social/psychological/relational needs. In no other period has this historically outlying belief so dominated, nor has mental health disability so increased.
Can we stop medicalising student anxiety as a ‘mental health problem’. I'd be anxious if I were about to enter such an inhospitable world: with flat-lining wages, high inflation & job insecurity, unreachable house prices, careers for life gone, & massive students debt to repay.
I wish people realised how common and how well evidenced our position on anti-pathology and over-medicalising human distress is. People think I’m just saying this stuff on my own, like I dreamt it all up yesterday.
I had lunch at the House of Lords today. There were around 20 guests, all desirous for MH reform. All seemed highly receptive to the idea that we’re over-medicalising/medicating emotional distress. I doubt there are many left today who aren’t critical of this. Now we need action.
So excited that #TheOctopusMan is now out in paperback for more people to read it and understand..
A) how great a writer Jasper Gibson is
and…
B) how medical model responses to hearing voices are often very unhelpful!
Buy it! Read it! Pass it on! 🐙

2 more days to #BeyondTherapyFest@wshed!
Time to introduce our next co-commission with @GreenHseBristol: Telling Truths, Telling Tales by @ShareClaw, a sequence of visual & spoken poems which examine how current systems respond to the trauma of sexual assault. #CSA#ItsNotOK
I would love to see a university counselling service that tried, through caring relationships, to re-politicise students understanding of their social predicaments & suffering; advancing peer support & solidarity, while locating 'therapy' in raised political awareness & action.
Normal trauma responses such as dissociation are pathologised. Dissociation around #CSA is a wider collective experience. We live in a culture that would rather turn away than face the scale & impact of abuse. @dropthedisorder host #CuttingOut on 12/5 👇

Wild that it’s seen as extremist and controversial to be completely opposed to the use of ECT.
Most people don’t even know it’s still being used, people think it was banned decades ago. Some people think it’s something from horror films, they have no idea NHS is using it today.
