@LawrenceGostin I thought Senator Paul’s opening remarks were quite thoughtful. For example, “Secrecy destroys trust, arrogance destroys trust, censorship destroys trust.” I’ve never heard Dr Fauci say anything that shows a mind and heart oriented to such truths.

Not the end of the world, but an unhealthy strain of thought that lulls people to forget they need vigilance against their own leaders.

@emilyakopp A side note: In the interview, Weissmueller asks what message Prasad thinks people should take away from the deaths, then answers the question himself first, saying the number is “not a lot.”

I wish he’d had integrity to just say the number and not tell people how to think.

Imagine if humanity had an older neighboring alien civilization. If they were benevolent, we might not have lived so long in ignorance. They might’ve taken ancient civilizations aside and said, “the universe is this …” Maybe so much reality wouldn’t be contested.

@Peacemaker811 I dislike the word privilege because it’s used as a cudgel. If we could somehow find ourselves in a truly open, fair chat, no cudgels, no gotchas, I wonder if you’d talk more openly about the experience of beauty. And whether I could talk about the opposite without grievance.

And if we fail a competition, we can create a new game with new rules in our favor.

@DrRandallBock Reminds me of a decade or so ago when my car was stolen. The next day at work I told a coworker. She was quick to say, “It was probably just a poor person who needed to get to work.”

She wanted to steer me away from thinking people steal because they’re criminals.
