In tonight's episode of #CustodiansOfIreland 🌳 we meet Maria Cullen from Woodlands of Ireland who is looking for indicators of ancientness in the woods of Luggala in Wicklow. We also hear from expert plantsman Jan Ravensberg from his nursery in County Offaly. 🌿 10pm 🌍
Revival of the traditional skill of dry stone walling through the restoration of the historic landscape is underway. Stone is natural, durable & emits no VOCs, maintenance is low, and it provides a bond to the earth and our history and creates resilience in the fragile landscape.
Luggala is supporting native upland woodland regeneration to increase biodiversity. Management of the non native invasive weed species Rhododendron ponticum is allowing for the germination of the native oak (Quercus petraea).
Status Orange HIGH Forest Fire Risk Warning is in place until Friday 23rd July.
Coillte advises that all outdoor use of fires, barbeques and other open ignition sources be avoided on forest lands and in other high-risk areas.
