Movie Review: "Iron Lung" - Sucked. Getting whiffs of "Event Horizon", but only the faintest. Not to be understated how much was done with such little budget, but another proof point for the argument that making movies from video games is hard.
Movie Review: "Outcome" - Sucked. They put together a hell of a cast to come up empty-handed. Turning a spoiled, playboy a-hole into the victim remains a bridge too far for me. Reeves is miscast and the weird west coast lighting/cinematography in every shot gets old fast.
Movie Review: "Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice" - Good. A little brainless with plot flaws too numerous to count. But, they gave gangsters some cute emotions, quick-talking Vaughn will always hold a place in my heart, and I found the soundtrack weirdly above-par.
Movie Review: "Send Help" - Sucked. McAdams decided to slum it. A flick that can't decide if its a gore-horror or a comedy, and doesn't do either particularly well. I never knew so many paralytic toxins were so readily available on small pacific islands...
Movie Review: "I Was A Stranger" - Good. This film took me out of my comfort zone and to parts of the world I know embarrassingly little about. I feel a little more grateful and my horizons feel a little broader.
Movie Review: "Father Mother Sister Brother" - Sucked. I think there were some lofty plans to show the ways diverse families are the same at their core, or reveal the different ways family members deceive each other, but wow, just painfully, mind-numbingly dull.
Movie Review: "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" - Good. Even better title. I got "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once" vibes from this one - that's a compliment. Plays on the increasingly real AI fears in a fun way. I like Rockwell more and more in everything he's in.
Movie Review: "Dracula" - Sucked. I think this one just gets overshadowed by a lot of the other really good recent monster movies. I appreciate the attempt at a timeless romance and the set/costume design is well done, but not enough to polish all the blemishes.
Movie Review: "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" - Sucked. I'm a big fan of this franchise, but what a disjointed latest chapter. What happened to Spike's Dad? Random Doc in the Zompocolypse can solve what the rest of world cannot? Absolutely useless cameo at the end? Do better.
Movie Review: "Dust Bunny" - Good. Mikkelsen continues his absolute onslaught of greatness. Wholly original and hugely fun. As if you need another excuse to watch something with Weaver in it...
Movie Review: "We Bury the Dead" - Sucked. The Star Wars fanboy in me wants Ridley to get a really good project outside of Star Wars. This isn't it. It is neither original enough or intense enough to stand up in the parade of good zombie movie we're spoiled with.
Movie Review: "Hamnet" - Good. This may be the first Shakespeare adaptation I really enjoyed. Buckley is so stinking good and this one will haunt me for a while.
Movie Review: "Marty Supreme" - Good. I never thought my next favorite sports movie would center around ping-pong. Chalamet may be pretentious to the max, but he earns a lot of it. My firs A'zion experience did not disappoint. Vampire reference at the end caught me off guard...
Movie Review: "Rosemead" - Good. Quality movie, but don't watch it. Crushing story of how mental health can kill a family. Really hard to get through, even if Liu does give a great portrayal of what it means to be Chinese-American.
Movie Review: "Mercy" - Sucked. Another movie that feels like the priority was special effects, not quality content. Ferguson is way too talented and way too cool to play an A.I.
Movie Review: "The Roses" - Sucked. I would say the ending is up there with some of the all-time open-enders if the rest of the film made me care enough to care. Good actors playing terrible people doing terrible things.
Movie Review: "Predator: Badlands" - Good. Love that they're are increasingly bringing the Predator and Alien universes together, and why not. So much good to throw into the pot and see what deliciousness get made. I wish the ending was a little less predictable.
