HOW TO CHOSE ARTISTS TO COMMISSION
Here are some tips to help you choose artists more safely and avoid bad experiences 🤍
▶ Commission output and activity:
Look at how often the artist posts finished commissions. Do they mostly post fanart or OCs, or do they consistently post completed comm work. Regular comm output is a good sign!
▶ Portfolio quality and consistency:
Check if their portfolio has a steady level of quality, a clear style, and enough examples. A consistent portfolio usually shows that they can deliver what they advertise
▶ Communication before payment:
Talk with the artist first. Do they sound clear, professional, and genuinely interested in your project. Friendly is nice, but sweet talk does not always mean good work!
❌ Artists who send short, rushed replies full of typos or show obvious lack of interest are a bad sign
✔️ Artists who ask for refs, ask questions, offer ideas, give you a clear quote, are usually good signs
▶ Professional links and TOS:
Check if they provide a website, business email, clear links with a proper TOS and price list. Having these ready usually shows more experience and commitment as a freelancer.
▶ Price clarity:
Make sure the quote you receive matches their posted prices. If the artist raises the price right after you ask for a comm without a valid reason, thats a red flag!
▶ Trello or queue updates:
If they use Trello or a similar tracker, check how often it's updated. Consistent updates usually mean a reliable workflow. Also check if they're already swamped with many active comms and/or a long waitlist. If they still accept more that could be a sign you'll wait before delivery
▶ Posts and reviews:
A quick look at their posts, handle history and any available reviews can tell you a lot about their work ethic and how they treat clients
▶ Payment method and safety:
Avoid sending direct payments to brand new accounts or through unsafe methods. Services like PayPal Goods and Services offer buyer protection. If the artist insists on risky payment methods (like friends&family), be careful!
▶ Example work that matches your request:
Make sure the artist has examples similar to what you want. If you want a detailed illustration but their portfolio only shows sketches or stylized work, the results might not match your expectations!
DISCLAIMER:
No checklist can guarantee a perfect experience every time, but these points have helped me choose reliable artists so far. I hope these help you 🙏🤍
To the people still commissionning real artists, thank you for supporting the art community! I hope you never get ghosted or scammed by an artist 💀
