Slip inside the mind and heart of a 1st gen American growing up and trying to stay afloat in the space between black and white, love and abuse, hatred and forgiveness. #PitMad#memoir Excerpt: https://t.co/87ggshRsRM
Thoughts during my weekly Zumba class (which consists of 100% non-white music):
I was impressed when we got our own Disney movies (Coco, Encanto), but being the new targeted group in America—that’s a whole new level, man. Hispanics are really movin’ on up.
Dangit. The lack of TikTok made me more productive than usual today and my first instinct is to document my productivity and post it on TikTok. 🙄 #addiction
Thinking of cutting sugar from my diet for a while.
Me: Okay, if I eat ALL the #girlscoutcookies this weekend, then I can start cutting out sugar on Monday! Er, Tuesday… or, that is, once I finish my stash of Hershey’s kisses at work…
@Theholisticpsyc The only reason I spoke up, at age 17, was because I discovered the school had a group for “survivors of child abuse,” and I wanted more than anything to BELONG, to know that there were others like me. I never got to join that group. My life imploded after I spoke up.
@Theholisticpsyc I carried the ongoing secret for 10 years to protect my parents, the very people who were damaging me. I didn’t feel shame. I never thought “Why did this happen to me?”
What I do still think is “How on earth did this not destroy me?” My therapists wonder the same thing.
I created a Grid Art project so the kids got 3-4 squares to draw each day this week and they didn’t figure out the result until today because the image was upside-down. One of my smartest 8th graders was blown away.
“You’re like really smart, Miss.”
Me: You have no idea. 😎
I was sitting in a café at a bookstore today. A young woman came up to me and asked, "Are you Joseph Fasano?"
This is all very new to me, so I said, half-jokingly, "I think so."
Then she showed me her arm, on which she'd tattooed the words, "Your life is not a crime."
When she left, I cried deep, unstoppable tears, knowing something I wrote in my darkest night helped someone else through hers.
