On the World Sickle Cell Day, we joined the global community in raising awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
We commemorated this day in Jinja City under the theme:"Building an S Sickle Cell Communities in Uganda, Na Newborn Screening and Knowing your Sickle Cell Status "

In an attempt to intensify the response to the rapidly increasing Sickle Cell Disease burden in Uganda, we held high level engagement for Sickle Cell Alliance member organisations at Hotel Africana to discuss new strategies to tackle the disease burden in the affected regions.

We were privileged be part of the historic event in Uganda's Health Sector. @DianaAtwine, the Permanent Secretary at the @MinofHealthUG officially launched the hydroxyurea plant marking a very big milestone for Uganda's Health Sector.

Uganda is one of the top four countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa where the prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease is alarmingly high. Every year, 25,000 babies are born with this condition, and tragically, 80% of them do not live to celebrate their fifth birthday.

Malaria is a significant health concern in Uganda, accounting for a substantial number of deaths and cases, with over 29% of the population at risk. There has been a high risk of infant mortality due to malaria caused by martenal anemia and low birth weight.
