I am a very proud Tasmanian (as many will know) and I am very proud to be a graduate of the University of Tasmania, having completed my undergraduate medical degree there in 1990. My education there had a big impact on my medical and academic career, and my scientific drive to push things forward and think outside the box. I was thrilled to be in Hobart recently for the announcement by UTas and The Menzies Insitute of Medical Research for a Higher Degree Research Scholarship named in my honour. I well recognise the importance and value of investing and supporting medical researchers, particularly in early career. I commend UTas on this generous and important award, and wish them and future recipients of the award all the best with future research. I was thrilled to have family and friends supporting me at the event.

As an Aboriginal woman, I know what it means to survive—to carry the strength of those who came before me. My ancestors, my mother and grandmothers all endured injustice, fought for dignity, and paved the way for my voice today.

On this day, I particularly stand in unwavering solidarity with Jewish women in Australia 🇦🇺 and across the globe 🌍 who have endured unimaginable horrors, past and now present. We are all survivors, some more so than we could ever fathom. I have felt your pain 💔

Women’s rights are not selective. If we demand equality, we must stand for all women. All women’s groups must stand for ALL women. Let’s lift each other, not tear each other down. Respect begins with us. Women, we are the givers of life!
