I remember when multi-faith prayer rooms were championed in British schools. As a Muslim child, both my primary and secondary school had no problem accommodating prayers for any student at break time. Kids from all religions were curious about one another. We had some fun informative conversations.

Religion makes up a huge part of some of our identities, so it is a shame that a place of education refuses to see the positive of what could be a communal facility.

Really is sad to see a headteacher weaponise faith this way. It's just a room. A small space and window of time to pray, Michaela Community School could have easily accommodated but the only reason it wasn't granted is because the faith asking for it is Islam... the only community who are still fighting for religious requirements.

Fortunately for my children their headteachers are very understanding and see prayer as an important part- Christian, Muslim, Hindu or other. Often a meditating reflective point that can be very instrumental for students mental well-being and focus.
