As well as literacy & numeracy, schools need to prioritise the well-being of our young people.Trauma informed responsive awareness & an education system that understands a few core concepts on brain development. Attachment, connection focussed with nurturing approaches .
“ADHD is not a disorder of not knowing what to do. It’s a disorder of not doing what you already know.”
Dr. Russell Barkley just delivered one of the clearest explanations of ADHD I’ve ever heard.
He says the brain can be split in two: the back part acquires knowledge, the front part (the executive system) uses it. ADHD acts like a meat cleaver that severs the two.
You already have the skills and information other people your age have. You just can’t apply them when it counts.
That’s why life becomes an endless series of last-minute crises. You’re time-blind — you can only deal with what’s right in front of you. The further away a goal or deadline is, the less real it feels.
The solution isn’t teaching more skills. It’s changing the environment at the exact point where the problem occurs — the “point of performance.”
It’s a game-changing way to understand why traditional approaches often fail.
@gerrydiamond71 Behaviour is a form of communication. I remember my son being labelled as aggressive. He hadn't had his second birthday yet. It was actually written in documentation when they were responding to questions about his behaviour. Unacceptable, in my opinion.
@tombennett71 I don't have a problem with consequences.
I have a problem with overly strict rules that have no room for error.
Late to work once - no problem things happen.
Forgot my laptop- go home and pick it up/work from home
Late to school? Forgot my planner? Lunch time detention.
There are many reasons why outdated behaviour systems & policies are not working in many educational settings?
They are not designed with the brain in mind.
Instead of trying to punish their way out of behaviour we ask? What does their nervous system need right now?🧠🌱
@gerrydiamond71 Yes, this is why there should be communication policies rather than behaviour policies. All pupils should also be taught about emotional literacy and understanding the nervous system too.
Perceived Bad moods and #autism. Noise can be overwhelming for many #autistic people. Remember they are not being anti-scocial if they leave. They are protecting you and themselves from the consequences. #autism
Pupils can't learn when they are scared.
Can't focus when they are anxious.
Can't follow instructions properly when they are overwhelmed or worried.
Why,because heightened emotions become a cortex under-resourced.
The limbic system, emotional control centre takes over.🧠🌱
Many young people grow up in environments where regulation may not have been consistently modelled. This is where educational settings play a crucial role because this is the first place they experience co-regulation & calm with an adult.🧠🌱
@gerrydiamond71 I agree, this is why pupils need to be taught about the nervous system. We also need communication policies rather than behaviour policies.
“You don’t look disabled” is one of the most normalized forms of ableism.
Invisible disability is still treated like a credibility problem. It should not be.
If your understanding of disability only covers what you can see, that understanding is incomplete.
#disability
Using the window of tolerance with pupils we need to help turn on their pre frontal cortex so they can navigate different emotions uncomfortable & comfortable without feeling dysregulated.Pupils need to understand what the window of tolerance is & what is your nervous system🧠🌱

@AshtonLamont@milton_damian You may get thrown some crumbs but they won’t last . Restricted crumbs. I wish I was more positive but experience has taught me not to be , not only is it a postcode lottery but the positive postcodes are shrinking their services too. You are definitely not alone .
The government talks inclusion but then praise results of schools that literally have pushed out SEND children. Meanwhile we have more visits from families of children praised schools where they have told them they can’t meet need.
