There was a time when we were regularly treated to embedded reports like this. The likes of NTA’s Mohammed Abdulkadri, AIT’s Brenda Uji, and a whole host of excellent defence correspondents provided us with frequent updates on military operations.

Yet, he died with only one house — a house he acquired through a ₦40,000 bank loan, which he repaid in instalments.

In 1974, when he wanted to build a house in Maiduguri, he applied for a ₦40,000 bank loan. The bank requested a guarantor. He approached his boss, General Yakubu Gowon, then Head of State and Commander-in-Chief, to stand as his guarantor.

General Gowon declined, explaining that it would amount to an abuse of office for him to facilitate such a loan.

Shettima then explored other options.

Julius Berger was already a well-established construction company at the time. He approached the company to build the house for him.

They agreed on one condition:
Julius Berger would finance and build the house, then rent it out until the ₦40,000 was fully recovered through deductions from his salary.
Shettima accepted the arrangement. That was how he built his modest bungalow in Maiduguri.

He was only able to achieve this through a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) arrangement with Julius Berger.

He attended Monguno Primary School, Teachers' College Bauchi, Teachers' College Katsina, the College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, Moray House College of Education, and the University of Edinburgh.

He was also presented with the Keys to the Cities of New York City, Louisville (Kentucky, USA), Quito (Ecuador), and Lima (Peru).

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼

"Recite What Is Easy": A Timeless Lesson from Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:20).

One of the most profound demonstrations of Allah's perfect knowledge of His creation is found in the closing verse of Surah Al-Muzzammil.

Allah says:

"...He knows that there will be among you those who are ill, others traveling throughout the land seeking Allah's bounty, and others fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from the Qur'an..." (Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:20).

Reflect on the remarkable depth of this verse.

Allah, the Creator of mankind, knows every circumstance we will face. He knows that life is not always the same. There are seasons of strength and seasons of weakness. There are days when our bodies are healthy, and days when illness confines us. There are times when we are busy earning a lawful livelihood, running businesses, working demanding jobs, conducting research, attending school, raising families, or traveling in search of sustenance. There are even those who dedicate themselves to defending the Ummah.

Yet, despite acknowledging every legitimate excuse that may occupy our lives, Allah does not say, "Leave the Qur'an until you are free."

Instead, He lovingly commands:

"So recite what is easy from it."

What an extraordinary balance between divine command and divine mercy.

Allah does not burden us with an amount we cannot bear. He does not specify a chapter, a page, or an hour. He simply asks that we never allow our connection with His Book to be completely severed.

If you cannot recite a juz', recite a page.

If you cannot recite a page, recite a few verses.

If you cannot recite many verses, recite one verse with reflection.

The point is not the quantity—it is the continuity.

This verse teaches us that no matter how demanding life becomes, there is always room for the Qur'an. A believer's relationship with the Book of Allah should never disappear because of worldly responsibilities. The One who gave us those responsibilities is the very One who instructed us to maintain our connection with His words, even if only with "mā tayassara"—what is easy.

This is also a powerful reminder that our careers, businesses, studies, wealth, and ambitions are not excuses to neglect the Qur'an. Allah already knew these realities long before we experienced them, and He addressed them in His revelation over fourteen centuries ago.

So ask yourself:

How busy am I that I cannot spare five minutes for the speech of the One who gave me twenty-four hours?

The believer who recites even a little every day is fulfilling this divine instruction. Consistency, however small, is beloved to Allah.

May Allah make us among the people of the Qur'an, whose hearts remain attached to His Book in times of ease and hardship, in health and sickness, at home and while traveling. May He grant us the ability to recite, understand, live by, and teach His glorious Qur'an until we meet Him.

On the NNPCL N210 Trillion

When the issue of the 210trn broke the internet, I commented that its just and addition of multiple entries to obtain a vague figure for media trial.

@BalaWunti appeared before the committee to shed more light on the issue and he has done more than justice to the issue.

Based on the attached interview, here are the facts:

1. No any figure of N210 trillion appears in the NNPC 2023 Audited Financial Statements (AFS).

2. The N210 trillion figure was derived by adding N107 trillion in receivables to N103 trillion in payables.

3. The NNPCL after PIA began operating two accounts, the shareholders’ account and the commercial account with NAPIMS now NUIMS operating the stakeholders and NNPCL HQ operating the commercial account. And being NUIMS a subsidiary, both its inflows and outflows must reflect on NNPC’s main account.
