🌍🎤 Voices in Colorectal Surgery – Episode 1
We’re thrilled to kick off our Voices in Colorectal Surgery campaign with a powerful conversation between Nicolas Avellaneda, colorectal surgeon from Argentina and active member of the ESCP Communications Committee, and Prof. Frank Frizelle, President of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ).
In this first episode, Nicolas and Frank dive into leadership, surgical culture across continents, and the shared values that connect us all in the global colorectal community.
This is more than just a conversation — it’s the beginning of a shared journey toward Tripartite 2025 in Paris.

Sigmoid volvulus: outcomes of surgery and conservative management after initial colonoscopic decompression (the VOLVUCOL study)
This study reports real-world outcomes of patients admitted with a first episode of sigmoid volvulus
The main finding is that patients treated conservatively by colonoscopic decompression alone have a significantly higher risk of volvulus recurrence and worse long-term survival than patients treated with surgery
This suggests that patients should undergo endoscopic decompression and then be scheduled for urgent elective surgery unless emergency surgery is necessary due to perforation
