@GiveDirectly only delivers your donations unconditionally, never requiring anything of recipients in exchange for the 💸. Other groups give conditionally, leveraging the funds to encourage a desirable behavior like school attendance – bring your kids to school and you get the 💸, otherwise you do not. 

Conditioning cash is sometimes better at increasing that one desired behavior, but at what cost?

📈 Enforcing conditions brings added expense that can triple operational costs. Put another way, with a $1M program giving $500 per person would reach 300 fewer people by adding conditions.

👨‍👩‍👦 The most vulnerable are most likely to fail to meet these conditions. In a conditional education program, the poorest families were more likely to be the ones to be excluded for failing to bring their kids to school, thus missing out on the urgently needed cash.

📚We can use nudges rather than conditions to encourage desired behaviors. A comparison found simply labeling unconditional cash as an “education support program” produced the same boost to attendance as conditioning the cash on attendance, and at a lower cost.

As the Dad of 2x Q4 kids, this RAE stuff really bugs me...

Early selection should be banned from sports. Choose later, post-development. And let the kids play through their childhood.

This is, one reason at least, why again early selection is just a bananas approach to development.

I do love the irony of people telling me I can’t be sure of a non linear approach, when they seem so sure that the best approach is a linear early selection approach.

There is no positive evidence to support it, whatsoever, but endless examples of it failing people. This does have a direct effect on some people’s health. That’s a deep and dark reality.

Early selection heavily influences RAE (relative age effect). Academies in Soccer select children before maturation and that’s the Pool the players come from then for nationals. But don’t think Gaelic games or your sport is special or different, it’s not. Some Rep GAA teams I’ve seen have been close to exclusively first half of the year. It doesn’t make any logical sense that your ability is reliant on what month you are born.

This is the data. This is the proof it fails.
It’s not the first and it won’t be the last. It’s not unique to any sport. And on the surface I can understand someone kinda thinking “so what”. But at the root of it is players being discarded, drop out rates and the adultification of youth sport. Stealing children’s early years of activity.

But that data is not new now. If it was 15-20 years ago when these kids were born you’d say “ah, we are only getting the data now”

Let’s change so. That would be acceptable, as you don’t know what you don’t know.

From bottom up however we did know that this system was flawed both from the early selection and damage that it does to individuals and participation with 20+ years.

And we also know from the top elite selection level that it creates a homogeneous playing community, cuts off late developers and also affects creativity and challenge.

People minding jobs is one major issue. But these people will be used elsewhere, it’s pretty straightforward to phase things out over a reasonable 3-5 year period. Just stop selecting and having trials year on year until the entry is maybe 15.

NGB’s and Sports organisations and even governments if they had anything about them should not allow any early selection of note before 15. It should actually be made illegal. There is a an argument to be made it is infringing on children’s rights.

Then NGB’s should remove formal competitions up to u13 at a minimum also. That takes away some of the foolishness we see at local level particularly but not exclusively in soccer.
It’s obvious to anyone with even a mild interest and bit of research that if we took this approach and peeled back present selection approaches we would make everything more enjoyable, increase participation and raise the standards of the sports.

Having “A” teams at u10 in the local soccer team or go-games is early selection also. That’s early selection at club level. It’s really dumb, let’s not sugarcoat that.
We know it’s poor practice and damaging. GDA’s know this. FAI Development officers know this. Everyone knows this. They are highly educated these days. So either they are obstructed (and no doubt doing their best within the constraints) or they are wilfully ignoring best practice. Often of course it’s done whine the backs of the development people, and that’s a lack of education. I know from dealing with coaches that when you give them the knowledge and can attach it to the really work 90% of them go with it because 90% of people are there for the right reasons.

If you look at the attached photo, that’s a quick run over the Irish Rugby team, quite balanced. And a notably robust system that doesn’t have excessively early selection and a litany of players who were on lower graded teams in school. The Irish Rugby system, while I’m sure not perfect, works from that POV.
