Navigating the web3 wallet landscape is hard, the technology is complex and there are lots of deceiving marketing tactics. To that end, I'm starting a series of posts to demystify wallet custody & self-custody for brands & web2 companies that are thinking about jumping into web3, starting with what I call: Custodial "Self-Custodial" Wallets 😄

Custody pertains to ownership AND control of the assets or goods. If the provider CAN sign transactions with the private keys either via direct access to the keys, or indirectly via additional actions the provider is able to perform without the customer's consent, it is a custodial solution.

For the solution to be called self-custodial, the user must be *absolutely* required to act for a transaction to get signed. This means that:
1) if the provider can disappear, transactions signing still works.
2) if the provider publishes a malicious client update for customers to install, private keys still can't be used without user actions.
3) if the provider's AWS, GCP, or HSM admin keys get compromised, private keys still can't be used without user actions.

Add these to your due diligence checklist because the self-custodial conversation will quickly turn into a "well, we have secure processes internally to make sure that X doesn't happen". Keep in mind that custodial solutions are legally required to have "secure processes to make sure that X doesn't happen", unlike self-custodial wallets.

I'm seeing more an more self-proclaimed self-custodial solutions that have online access to the customers' keys directly or indirectly and hence very much fall in the custodial category from a legal & regulatory standpoint.

Those self-proclaimed self-custodial wallets models literally have the exact same trust model as custodial wallet solutions and I believe that it's only a matter until regulators crack down on self-custodial providers with access admin access to the key management systems where the asset keys are located (among others).

As a customer, it's absolutely critical for you to get the legal & regulatory protection of a custodial provider if your provider has control or access to your assets. Providers tend to play with levels of indirections in the security model to introduce confusion without preventing their own indirect access or control to your assets.

I don't think Twitter provides an API to lookup who has a verified NFT of a given collection in their profile picture..🧐

That'd be so useful for the entire space. NFT projects could reward people who use their NFT as a digital social identity instead of relying on staking etc..

I'm finalizing the code for Night Mode - excited to see what your Rebel will look like with it!

We've generated the 13370 Rebels & metadata is ready. I'm done with smart contract + hardhat unit tests. 👨🏻‍💻 Some more clean up & deployment stuff needed on the website.
