"The Stone Age did not end because we ran out of stones, and the Oil Age will not end because we run out of oil." Dr. Madhukar Garg, Former President, R&D, Refining and Petrochemicals, @RIL_Updates, opened his keynote address by noting that the energy transition is driven by innovation, not resource depletion.
He spoke at length on the strategic importance of biofuels and cleaner liquid fuels for India in terms of energy security, as well as Net Zero.
He highlighted India's progress through its Biofuel Policy and India's early biofuel innovation domains in Compressed Biogas (CBG), Bio-LPG, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
While technological advances are essential, he stressed that successful deployment depends equally on commercialisation.
"I have an 80/20 principle! Achieving Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9 may require only about 20% of the total effort. The remaining 80% lies in commercialisation. We need to build markets, convince investors, customers and stakeholders, and successfully take innovations outside the lab. And this is where such partnerships, such as the C-CAMP MCยฒ+ Foundation partnership (@MCSquarePlus), come into play."

Key takeaways:
** Major ways to unlock India's potential in biofuel innovation include developing India-centric biofuel production, and de-risking available technologies and commercialising them. Additionally, set-up processes for hydrothermal liquefaction that will enable large scale conversion of wet biomass into crude.
** Sourcing of biomass such as agri waste is a fragmented process in India. There are significant logistics, implementation and last-mile gaps which need proper systematisation and centralisation for any biofuel initiative to succeed.
** For biofuels such as Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) to emerge as a serious alternative, there should a transformational push similar to the National Solar Missionโone that enables cost competitiveness with conventional fossil fuels, similar to how solar power achieved grid parity with thermal power.
** Investors shy away from pushing capital in biofuels not because of technical failures of innovations but commercial risks. TRL 3 to TRL 9 can be addressed through technology development but beyond TRL 9 it is a commercialisation issue. Most of India's biofuel dreams are failing at this level.
