@Dollar_Bill_100@jimstewartson What’s wrong with Ukraine kicking Russia’s azz now with minimal U.S. money? We should be learning their drone technology, but Trump and MAGA are too proud to learn.
@shoccoe@AdamKinzinger@OutnumberedFNC@FoxNews@kayleighmcenany They realize, like everyone else, that Trump is desperate to do a deal, which is why he announces they are close to a deal every few days. Expert say they have 4-5 more months, and they expect Trump to fold way before then.
Crazy story out of Qatar:
A British couple honeymooned in Doha, where the wife was harassed at the Ritz-Carlton pool by two men who told her she'd "fall in love" after he slept with her.
The hotel gaslit her, with management denying the CCTV backed her story despite their own WhatsApp messages saying the opposite.
Her husband posted a TripAdvisor review calling the hotel "unsafe for women." The hotel got it pulled, then a hotel employee filed a defamation complaint against him under Qatar's cybercrime laws.
Nearly a year later, when he returned to Qatar for work, he was detained, informed he'd been tried in absentia and fined, and then held for four nights in a deportation centre. The deportation order lasts five years, which severely hurts his career as a Middle East healthcare consultant.
In other words, Marriott International, an American company, used Qatari law to silence a complaint about a woman being sexually harassed at their property.
@cate_long@GiantPlums@TheEconomist So you backed off the crazy take that this war was going to increase energy security. If Trump allows Iran control of the Strait, it would be the exact opposite actually. Even if he doesn’t, the Iranians now know they can use this card in the future,
@JamesSurowiecki Unrealistic. Iran will want to extract more concessions than that for giving up the Strait IMO. Why would they just give away their leverage for so little, particularly given how unreliable the U.S. has been as a negotiating partner.
@cate_long@maloftis1 This is a questionable take that presupposes the energy market wasn’t stable before the war. The LT stability benefits are dubious from a financial perspective even if everything goes well.
@c_costis@brianschatz You claim expertise in economics. How could you not understand the impact of rising oil prices on the global economy, including ours? Even if we supply our own oil, oil is a global market such that prices in both WTI and Brent crude have risen off the chart.
@KimStrassel Are you serious??? Biden's policies, such as putting a hold on LNG exports, were a mistake. However, calling Trump's policies a Triumph is laughable. If he had properly planned for the war, Trump would have filled up the SPR and prepared for the impact of the strait closure.
@LelandVittert There is clear evidence that it was a tomahawk, including a made in America component - you think as news person you’d know that versus being an apologist for the administration.
@NateSilver538 Nate, what you're referring to is backwardation. Futures almost always trade below spot price when spot oil prices shoot up due to a supply/demand imbalance. You are correct (and Charles surprisingly off given his finance background) but just thought I'd point out this is common
