@EM_RESUS As many others have posted, flail chest. I’ve seen this after fractures on both sides of the sternum after chest compressions in a non-intubated patient. Very painful and causes inefficient respiratory mechanics. Also, likely more pathology hiding beneath the surface.
UNC Children's is back with another amazing music video celebrating 2024!

I was at my parents house for Christmas. My mom gave me a notebook from an advanced mathematics course I took in 2003. I immediately recognized my writing — hasn’t changed a bit. But the math was incomprehensible to me (including a proof I had written “Obvious!!” next to 20 years ago).
While we still have a couple days left in December, please help us shoutout ASRA Pain Medicine's monthly Member Spotlight recipient, @MD_phinance! Dr. David Flynn serves as the @ASRA_Society CPT Advisor for the @AmerMedicalAssn. Learn more about him here: https://t.co/g3hlSjTeU5
A Massive Student Debt Strike?
40% of student loan borrowers didn’t resume this fall.
Reporters say this is a “strike”. Others say student loan borrowers are lazy deadbeats.
Both are wrong.
The real problem?
Servicers messed everything up so borrowers can’t pay even if they want to.
I’ve worked with tons of doctors who want to pay but can’t because servicers can’t properly calculate monthly payments.

My financial wellness tips for physicians in 2024:
1/ Prioritize your physical and mental health. When these are poor, your net worth is irrelevant.
2/ Adjust spending and savings to your income, not the other way around.
3/ Set realistic goals. Impossible goals are a set up for failure.

After private equity firms acquire hospitals …
Shift to young patients, fewer dual eligibles (ie, fewer poor patients).
Despite this,
25% more hospital acquired conditions:
27% more falls,
38% more CLABSIs,
2x more surgical site infections.

Update on my @Hertz saga:
To recap, I rented a car and checked in online for a 12/23 rental.
At the counter, Hertz told me I was on the DNR list (do not rent). It was Saturday and the DNR office is only open on Weekdays, so my family was stranded at the airport.
Today I spoke to the DNR aka “suspended privileges” office. They said my drivers license was associated with someone else’s name. Then they changed their mind and told me it wasn’t and that I had never been on the DNR list.
I asked for a voucher to compensate for the extra cost of renting last-minute with Avis.
They said no.

First (and last) cleaning of my hospital locker in 5 years. What do anesthesiologists stash away?
1. About 30 IVs (sizes 14G-24G), various lengths
2. N95s - multiple pandemic iterations
3. Eye protection
4. Topical lidocaine
5. Disposable bronchoscope
6. Tegaderms (too numerous to count)
7. Scrubs, top only
8. Archaic communication device (called a “pager” by the ancients).
9. Advil
10. Cric kit (expired)
