🚨PhD ALERT! 🚨 We are looking for a highly motivated student to use 🧬 genomic approaches 🧬 to unravel the mysteries of migration using yellow-browed warblers. Think this is you or someone you know? Then come to our Q&A session at on 02/12 and check out the ad below!
Congratulations to @PortlandBirdObs - a great hit on their #motuswts system of a Dutch tagged Yellow-browed Warbler. Excellent detail on its movements & timings.
@AksuLehikoinen @TimsBirding@harris_sjh@spurnbirdobs These birds are so small that any difference in PC shape is hard to spot. However, there is an average difference in the quality in juvenile vs adult PC that may be helpful. Kind of as in Goldcrests. But the carachters mentioned by Tim above is usually much more reliable.
During the last few days four Pallas's Leaf Warblers have been ringed, and a fifth (unringed) one is still hanging around in the lighthouse garden.

Results from a recent DNA-analysis of some odd Lesser Whitethroats from the last years was just returned. The star bird - a dark and heavy billed C. c. althaea - represents the third record for Europe! #ottenby#birdringing#birdbanding#birdmigration
@nomadbirder Nice one. I agree the upperparts gives an eastern impression, though difficult to judge tail pattern and wing formula here. Given the variation we see within nominate I think we still need to be very careful with field records... But yes, would be a good bird to sample.
If, like me, you find it fascinating that small migratory birds reach altitudes of 5,000 or 6,000m when crossing ecological barriers, check out our new preprint. We equipped 16 nocturnal migratory species with multi-sensor loggers to study their migration: https://t.co/ZygJlXD7iQ
@PhilWoollen@Stewchat It actually has a lot to do with how they are caught. Using walk-in traps has the advantage of not inducing the cramp; not while in the cages and not during the subsequent handling. Mistnetting takes the bird through another physiological path due to exertion/stress.
@PhilWoollen@Stewchat Not shocking at all. By using walk-in traps and hard bottom bird bags, the waders at Ottenby does not develop stress myopathy during the handling. Stress myopathy seems to be more frequent when trapped in nets and when soft fabric birdbags are used.
It's been a nice wader summer here at Ottenby, and >5000 have been ringed. Most adult birds have passed by now, and the juveniles are taking over - like this beautiful Broad-billed Sandpiper. #birdmigration#birdringing#birdbanding#autumnmigration#ottenby

A barely fleged, beautiful and rather aberrant Icterine Warbler (Hippolais icterina). Such odd yellow plumage is usually caused by a melanin deficiency in the bird.
