Language and cognition research lab focussing on speakers of Minority, Indigenous, Non-standard & Dialect varieties. Based: @AbertayPsych, led by @DrNeilKirk.
As synthetic voices become indistinguishable from real ones, DIGIT spoke with psychologist Dr Neil Kirk about how our instinct to trust our own accents could make way for deepfakes targeting not just individuals, but entire regions.

New preprint of my #AIVOICE work - I used the Voice Changer feature on @elevenlabs and showed that listeners weren’t all that great at distinguishing natural from AI-enhanced voices, but were more likely to believe the voice was human when it spoke a familiar regional dialect.
An excellent start to #ICL2024 Francis Ameka in the first plenary flags a Western theoretical bias in linguistics and a crucial shift from Western standard languages to minority non-standardised languages. @DrNeilKirk you got a shoutout!
So this absolutely blew my mind, as someone who knows 4 languages and multiple dialects.

Is this why when I'm speaking French my brain also tries to speak Hindi?

Check out this thread showcasing one of our recent publications! We are really proud to have published this as a Registered Report and hope this will be the first of many, such is our commitment to #OpenScience 🧠
🚨 New paper alert 🚨 - @MatDeclerck and I are really delighted to have had a #RegisteredReport published in @PLOSONE investigating language control processes in speakers of Dundonian Scots and Scottish Standard English, funded by @CarnegieUni . 🧵👇

Proud face of someone who made a decision 14 years ago to quit playing World of Warcraft and go back to uni, who found out today he got promoted to Senior Lecturer 🥳
🚨New preprint alert!🚨 I'm thrilled to share "Shared or separate: Control processes of cross- and within- language interference", summarising 3 experiments with Dutch-English, Arabic-English, and Chinese-English bilinguals investigating cognitive control. https://t.co/lKbrOkdDVS
Delighted to have been awarded £9920 from the @BritishAcademy_ /@LeverhulmeTrust small grants scheme with @MatDeclerck to improve ecological validity of language control research. Particularly pleased as we built in a submission to @PCI_RegReports as part of the proposal!

I use the example of Scots - despite official recognition as a minority language, it's not always given that status even by speakers themselves. The paper summarises our previous work with Dundonian & Orcadian speakers, highlighting similar findings to bilingual research🧠🗣️
🚨New paper just published online in Applied Psycholinguistics by @DrNeilKirk :
MIND your language(s): Recognizing Minority, Indigenous, Non-standard(ized), and Dialect variety usage in “monolinguals” https://t.co/i2Ik2gbj6j
In this position piece, I outline the lack of diversity in the language varieties that are often studied in psycholinguistic research and how this can impact bilingual research by misclassifying some speakers as "monolingual" despite engaging cognitive mechanisms like bilinguals.
ICYMI - our paper with Orcadian speakers:
#SummaryLimerick
"There once were some speakers from Kirkwall,
who some might call 'monolingual',
But when their chantin's exhibited,
their Orcadian's inhibited.
Cognitively, it's like being a bilingual!"
