The Puntland Council of Ministers, at its weekly meeting today, we have approved decisive measures to strengthen the protection of Puntland’s 1,680 km coastline and EEZ against piracy and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (#IUU) fishing.

We have directed all security and maritime enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement across Puntland’s maritime jurisdiction, take firm action against anyone violating Puntland’s waters and ensure that offenders are brought before the law.

These measures reaffirm the Government of Puntland’s commitment to protecting its maritime resources, safeguarding coastal communities, upholding the rule of law and promoting the sustainable use of the blue economy.

As Minister of Environment, Range & Climate Change, I am deeply concerned that 85% of Puntland’s energy comes from firewood & charcoal. This reliance depletes our forests and harms the environment. Low gas usage (9%) is due to high costs, international price fluctuations, and lack of proper facilities.

We must urgently invest in affordable, sustainable alternatives such as solar energy, while supporting the transition for those in the firewood & charcoal trade with new income opportunities.
