It is now a crime in Zimbabwe for businesses to charge prices above the fixed government exchange rate of 13.56 to the US Dollar.
Zimbabwe introduced a new currency three weeks ago, the ZiG, which sadly lost value against the US Dollar within a week of its introduction on the black market.
Some businesses were following the black market rate to protect themselves from losses, but that is now illegal.
Under the new Statutory Instrument (SI), setting prices above the official exchange rate will attract a civil penalty of ZiG200,000 or an amount equivalent to the goods sold.
This new regulation will now result in prices increasing in US Dollars, allowing businesses to adjust their profit margins and mitigate losses caused by a fixed exchange rate that does not reflect the local currency’s real value.
Prior to today's regulation announcement, businesses were allowed to set prices up to 10% above the official exchange rate.
This dear old man is actually a victim of a broken system. If Zimbabwe had a functional pension system, social grants and support for the old, would he be clowning around like this? They’d rather abuse the vulnerable and throw crumbs at them than invest public funds in a social security system that works.

🟣I don’t know who needs to hear this but a “Govt directive” is not law. Rule by decree is unconstitutional. Section 68 of the Constitution provides that all government officials must act on the basis of the law, reasonableness and fairness. This means that a policy only becomes legally binding and enforceable when it is enacted into law.
So a Minister can’t write a memo to schools and believe it has the force of law. It doesn’t. The Governor can’t say something on radio and think it becomes binding and enforceable. It doesn’t.
Only the law is binding.
This is a basic feature of the rule of law, which is a central tenet of a constitutional democracy. This nation would become a jungle if any public official could wake up and say do this or do that and force us to comply. It doesn’t work like that.
The principle of legality states that the law must be certain and positive. It must have equal and not selective application.
You can’t have one rule for your fuel stations and your Passport Office then another rule for schools.
This offends section 56 of the Constitution which states that everyone has the right to the equal protection and benefit of the law.

Is it just me or the Zim economy is just getting worse? The way this 2024 has started off is very worrisome if not alarming especially on the business side. Are you also experiencing the same kuside kwenyuwo?
@barrister_gutu I stay in a village and most of my people are already on the brink of starvation, very soon we will see the government feeding scheme but then again it’ll be politicized, there are those who are actually happy with the looming crisis because it’s going to be a convinient excuse
I am lost for words at the sight of such horrific scenes this is a sad reflection of the poison that has plagued our society. The socioeconomic suffering of the masses is clearly and evidently manifesting in our children, @MinistryofEd@zrp

@DandaroOnline@wicknellchivayo This is embarrassing poverty has been weaponized, had we developed our creative arts industry our entertainers would afford to buy their own cars and the luxuries of life without sacrificing a part of their souls, only men without conscience see what wicknell is doing as good
🟣Dear Minister Edgar Moyo & @official_MOEPD,
1. Frankly, it is unacceptable that we always have rolling blackouts and chronic loadshedding because of “system disturbances” at Hwange Power Station. This thermal power station was built in 1973. Why has Zimbabwe not invested in maintaining it and building new power stations?
2. You’re aware that 70% of the nation’s electricity is produced through hydropower. Currently, the water level at Zimbabwe’s main source of hydropower, Kariba Dam, stands at 15%. Given that El Niño and the drought were foreseen, what steps did the Ministry of Energy take to ensure Zimbabwe would have enough electricity for domestic and industrial use?
3. @ZetdcOfficial paid millions to a known individual for a solar project. What progress has been made on the implementation project? Why do we not have thriving solar parks to mitigate Zimbabwe’s power crisis?
4. We cannot continue like this. When will loadshedding and these rolling blackouts end?
On the left is a solar park in Egypt.
On the right is a solar park in Zimbabwe.
The difference is leadership.
We need new leaders.🇿🇼
Today I can say it’s one of those days i am proud of our National police service, nothing can justify such unspeakable cruelty to your innocent children, I believe this will be a deterrent to those unscrupulous people who find pleasure in hurting and exploiting young children
