At school I was in a special class with an advanced program in mathematics and physics. To get in, you had to pass exams — math and physics.

So I took my first exams in life at 13.

Twenty-five students made it through: 19 boys and 6 girls.

The school administration decided the ratio was wrong. So they added three more girls. Not one of them lasted even the first year. All six girls who earned their place on the exam went the distance and graduated with the rest of us.

Because the purpose of an exam is not to “hand out privilege” or “secure prestige,” the way progressives in Western societies talk about it now. The purpose of an exam is to select those capable of mastering the program, so that the resources a society spends on education produce the maximum effect — so that qualified, competent scientists, engineers, financiers, pharmacists and so on actually appear.

I find it strange, and frankly appalling, that in our time this is not obvious to everyone.

That’s exactly what Canadian healthcare is, a two tiered system where the bottom tier waits months for basic care, even longer for specialists, but hey, they offer free euthanasia kits to kill yourself. Top tier still have access to paid health insurance.
