Well said, @haldonahue! House Republicans will thank us for our service, then turn around and cut our benefits! Not on our watch!

Some say love is the most powerful human driver/desire. Others say sex, or hunger. As a social scientist, I am aware of Maslow’s views, as well as those of many other key figures in this area.
However, I’ve long said that the strongest drive/desire of human beings, is that of familiarity.
A battered woman very often stays until she’s murdered, not because she is “stupid.” She often stays…because it is familiar. “Better the evil you know, than the evil you don’t know.” For her, familiar felt more comfortable than the fear of the unknown, or unfamiliar.
I’ve known 80 + year old farmers who had never been out of the 15-20 mile radius of the county they were born in. EVER. It’s not that they had never had dreams of doing something else, or seeing new things. No. The comfort of familiarity simply overrode those dreams.
Yes, even things that are dangerous, are also quite often familiar. In familiarity, we usually find a weird kind of powerful comfort. Even, and especially, while we are in a very UNcomfortable setting.
This is where many MAGA folks are situated. No, I’m not suggesting that familiarity is the only factor involved; it’s not.
However, MAGA is very familiar to them. Even those who may start feeling an occasional logical thought-about Donald Trump’s lunacy-enter their mind, they find that they immediately process it as being very UNfamiliar territory.
“Different” screams “FEAR” to the almond shaped structure in the brain called the amygdala. Unfamiliar, at least initially, is “different.”
When looking at your day to day preferences and routines, notice how few there are that qualify as “unfamiliar”, and how many are very….familiar. It’s a powerful force in our lives.
This is one reason independents are so often persuadable. Going in another direction isn’t nearly as unfamiliar. The familiarity of changing the path of their journey, when feedback indicates that doing so makes sense, is something they’ve done before. Thus, in familiarity…they find comfort in change.
As we think about MAGA, and wonder when their lunacy will end, just consider that, as long as it feels familiar…..and safe….it won’t. It’s going to be around for a good while.
We simply keep moving forward, bringing along as many people as we can, who find enough familiarity in changing their mind, to do so…and win election after election…until THAT…begins to feel familiar.

You can hear the words «Green Needle» or «Brainstorm» only based on which one you think about.

Donald Trump lit the flame, poured gasoline on the fire, and sat in the White House dining room for hours watching the fire burn as rioters attacked the U.S. Capitol. Today, he continues to fan those flames.
This was his dereliction of duty.
