🤔Why does iron deficiency cause fatigue, even in the absence of anemia?
I have often equated iron with hemoglobin and oxygen-carrying capacity.
But there is so much more to it!
The Lab Report Podcast, a project of the CSCC’s Education and Public Outreach (EPOCC) committee is LAUNCHED! Listen in as we pull back the curtains and reveal the inner workings of medical labs. Two episodes to get you started and subscribe for future! https://t.co/U9h4z0Er9x
#COVID19 has put an extraordinary strain on lab medicine leading to global shortages of blood tubes & other critical resources.
@CSCC_CACB & CAMB have assembled two #choosingwisely lists on conserving supplies for when they are needed most:

#irondeficiency What is iron deficiency and how to define? 2 outstanding studies this week that should change practice. Ferritin < 20-25 associated with impaired RBC production and iron absorption increases at Ferritin < 50. Interpretation Ferritin < 50 =>running low < 20 =>empty
There was a totally overlooked trial in @NEJM this week with jaw-dropping results. The question: how should we diagnose diabetes in pregnancy?
23,792 pregnant women randomized to receive either 1-step or 2-step screening for gestational diabetes.

Just had a meeting with the amazing @sholzberg and I’m fired up about ferritin reference ranges.
Clinicians, at your local lab what is the lower limit of normal for ferritin in a reproductive age female?
Each and every day, our 1300 employees are guided by compassion to bring reliable diagnostic testing for over two million patients, performing greater than 19 million tests annually. I am incredibly proud of our staff and their dedication to our patients #WeAreDynaLIFE#kindness
Iron deficiency is too often under-diagnosed, especially in premenopausal women, because clinical lab reference interval lower limits are inappropriate. This is a problem we CAN fix!
A pleasure to work with this dedicated interdisciplinary team @Beriault_ @sholzberg@paulyip18
Iron deficiency anemia is an issue of health equity and social justice. It is time for our reference intervals to facilitate proper management. An honour to work with this team. @MLPChemist @Beriault_ #raisethebar@JenniferTeichmn@acweyand
Mom shows up with a ferritin of 6 and is told it's in the normal range. Yet, has significant microcytic anemia. There is a problem with how clinical labs report ferritins.
Such a pleasure working with this team @MLPChemist@sholzberg@paulyip18 !!

To ensure testing continues on pace in Alberta, our partners @dynaLIFE asked local clinics to return critically needed swabs.
This act of outreach collected nearly 7,000 swabs for COVID testing. Thank you @dynaLIFE for you support.

At this time, Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) and DynaLIFE strongly recommend immediate cessation of routine non-essential laboratory testing. Patients who require bloodwork critical to their immediate care will continue to receive testing, and mobile collection services.
