Happy Friday! Today, we want to celebrate our clinical director, @UMichLaw Professor @RachaelKohl! Since joining the WRC, she's represented hundreds of claimants, returned $4,088,455.75 to the community, supervised 326 hearings, won 316 cases, & changed countless students' lives!
These actions by GOP governors are based on the false claim that UI benefits are hindering the recovery. But the economy is steadily improving: new claims came in at just 514,000 (down 35k) last week, after being over 1 million each week for nearly a year, from 3/21/20 - 3/13/21.
When these 24 states pull out of critical federal UI programs, 1 in 4 workers on unemployment will lose $300 per week, and more than 2 million people will be cut off completely from life-saving aid.
We now have a bifurcated and unequal system when it comes to supporting workers. 1/2 of our states recognize the need for aid to continue until jobs return. The other half is cementing inequality between people who have been forced out of work and those who have not.
SPOTLIGHT! Since 2019, our wonderful teaching fellow, Andrea Van Hoven has returned $1,445,075.94 to the community, acted as supervising attorney in 94 hearings, and submitted 49 briefs!
She has also mentored countless students and helped to fill the clinic with joy & laughter!
Stay cozy and celebrate the only legal clinic at @UMichLaw open to second-semester first year students with this Quarter-Zip by ordering it before June 2! #GoBlue. #LegalClinics It will ship RIGHT to your door.

Shout out to @UMichLaw Professor @RachaelKohl and Student Attorney Guus Duindam!!! Their brief led to a powerful reversal from Michigan's Court of Appeals. Their great advocacy was highlighted on @usnews!! #appellatetwitter#lawtwitter

Many people cannot return to work because they:
-Are not yet fully vaccinated
-Have caregiving responsibilities
-Are looking to change their field of work
-Seek better wages and conditions
-Need money for gas, phone, internet to search for work
#FixUI
Workers have the right to good jobs! A just economic recovery and return to "full" employment depends on many factors: increased vaccination; work supports like child-care and family care; and schools and day-care centers reopening. #FixUI
@UWUnited_ @NelpNews
Workers should not have to settle for less. It is on Congress to #RaisetheWage & pass the American Families Plan with continued #UI. Corporations who have amassed more wealth than ever in the past year must respond and create job conditions worthy of working people. #FixUI
The #COVID19 crisis is far from over, especially in communities of color where unemployment rates are historically higher due to systemic racism. #FixUI
Discontinuing pandemic unemployment payments won’t bring back jobs that disappeared.
It will prematurely and needlessly hurt workers, their families, and entire communities that are struggling against poverty. #FixUI
