All timer “probably but who knows”-nado in the NW Chicago suburbs yesterday near West Dundee #ilwx , as viewed from the Spring Hill Mall parking lot. The motion on this mini supercell was some of the most impressive I’ve seen throughout its entire life cycle. @NWSChicago
@skydrama Legit insane motion for what that storm was, we were blocked in most directions by trees but it was an absolute vacuum cleaner of scud and transient areas of concentrated rotation.
@BIGNUT291@JoeWorsterWX Adding to Joe’s point, you need stable updrafts to survive this shearing. It’s not exclusive to certain environments, but rather higher shear just necessitates greater forcing to have stable (aka stronger + wider) updrafts that can survive. Those effects all work against that.
@CameronJNixon@Get_EMLd Before the event I was tongue-in-cheek analoging the vertical (not horizontal) environment to 4/27/11 based on HRRR soundings, but post-mortem I think it’s a ~really~ fascinating comparison that you may want to look deeper into
@skydrama@NWSSPC Worth noting that this trend is far more pronounced at 500mb vs. lower levels, with these being so shallow I’m (genuinely) not sure how much of a difference it’ll make.
Also curious if the EL ≠ the tropopause plays a role in this?
